Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 Call it sentimental bullshit but does anybody else have fond memories of places in leicester which have now sadly disappeared? Mine would be- Filbert Street (obviously) so many memories of that place. The Wellington pub, which changed into Edwards and is now a Tesco Express always used to meet up with mates on a Fri and Sat night in there and before a home game, breaks my heart everytime I walk past it. Nigel the barman seemed to work there forever. Superbowl (always tried to get in the Studio on the way down) and Harveys nightclubs, great nights out! Modern Toys shop, not sure of the road name but as a kid then I loved that shop.

We all used to chip in and buy something cheap from the Thurmaston one everyday in the Summer Holidays.

I was thinking of the town shop, I am terrible with Street names it was down past Zodiac toys on the way out of town.
Webbo Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 I was thinking of the town shop, I am terrible with Street names it was down past Zodiac toys on the way out of town. The town one is an Indian restaurant now. It used to be on the corner of Belgrave Gate and Charles Street.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 Didn't there also used to be a Modern Toys on Belvoir St? The Cameo cinema on High Street. Thomas's video arcade in the Silver Arcade - many misspent 10ps in there. I think Voodoo clothes has gone too hasn't it? Costa's Cafe (not to be confused with Costa Coffee) on Belgrave Gate was a coffee bar I used to drink in long before Costas (the multinational steamroller) appeared on every street corner. Granby Hall - if the council had looked after it we could still have a great multipurpose venue, instead of a carpark.
Finnegan Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 VooDoo is still on Silver Street, if that's the one you mean. Opposite the Very Bazaar. It's generally shit unless you're fifteen, though.

Don't go into town too often, so I looked into the official Leicester CC website, couldn't find it listed under shops and panicked like a yummiemummie with only a 3/4 full tank in her BMW X3.
Guest Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 The Red Room - pub just near clock tower above the entrance to haymarket shopping centre. Cracking bar that just played rock/metal all the time

I used to play pin ball in Thomas's I remember they used to ramp the table right up making it ridiculously hard.
Guest Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 Would that of previously been Topps and then Rickshaws bar? No idea. It was Red Room around mid 90s to early 2000s I'd guess

Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 31 March 2012 Author Posted 31 March 2012 No idea. It was Red Room around mid 90s to early 2000s I'd guess I am going back a bit before that, mid 1980's it could of been Topps, adjacent to Kaisers nightclub I think there was a large Mr K sign outside the club on the wall of the Haymarket.
FantasticMrFuchs Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 Ainsleys Music & Video The LCFC Shop on Churchgate Beatties Electronics in the old shires To many to mention, I came home to Leicester at Christmas and ended up going into town to buy some presents and I was disgusted with how horrible the City Center has become. So many empty shops everywhere and the ones that are open were either Charity shops, Cash 4 gold/Instant cash shops, Seemed like the Highcross has killed off the city centre.

Finnegan Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 There's not a single Burger King in the city centre any more?
mikey54 Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 Lewis's department store on Humberstone Gate. Top totty in the lady's perfumery department.
Raw Dykes Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 There's not a single Burger King in the city centre any more? I found that shocking as well. Has the one on Granby st. gone, then? There is one at the Leicester Forest and one at the Markfield services on the M1. Wasn't there one next to St. Georges retail park? This is going back a few years, mind.

Finnegan Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 The one at LFE services is definitely still there, my flatmate's missus works there. Gets discount too, yum. (Should add, for her sakes, she doesn't actually work in the Burger King.)
m00nie Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 Wait the one next to Walkabout has closed? yep.. closed and stripped out already..
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 31 March 2012 Posted 31 March 2012 I can well remember the cattle market, as a small child, fascinated by all the various animals.
