Bellend Sebastian Posted 7 May 2012 Posted 7 May 2012 I'm very jealous, that's big enough to create something lovely with, and a good price too. Had a Juwel tank for nearly 10 years (from the same shop as it happens) with no problems. Probably going to go for a Ferplast this time as I want to run an external filter and the internal one it comes with isn't fixed. AQUARIUM TALK, YEAH
Bellend Sebastian Posted 9 May 2012 Posted 9 May 2012 I think Finners has either been stung to death by his new jellyfish, or we've bored him shitless and put him off the hobby for life

James. Posted 9 May 2012 Posted 9 May 2012 I'll pick up the reins from Finners. Roughly how much do you reckon I'd need to get a decent set up? In technical terms I want quite a big tank with all the filtration/heating stuff, a few nice fish but nothing ridiculously rare or expensive and maybe a model sunken ship to make it look good. Would £500 do the job? Is there a website where they sell me the whole starter package? I don't have access to Google.

Everyone should be interested, because as we all know, fish are brilliant. Model sunken ships aren't though, and the same goes for divers/skulls/mayan temples etc

Have I ruined everything by talking about model sunken ships?

Have I ruined everything by talking about model sunken ships? If it were anyone else, then yes, but because it's you, no. £500 would be plenty to buy all the kit and probably stock it too, depending on what you have. The set up that Ithuriel has just acquired would be perfect for a beginner, but whether that qualifies as 'quite big' I'm not sure. It would be big enough to look cool, certainly, and is big enough to be relatively easy to look after

Found these chaps - http://www.wholesaletropicalsaquatics.co.uk/ - which are down the road from where I live and stock Juwel tanks as well as loads of fish. Sorted. I'll update with any progress.
Finnegan Posted 10 May 2012 Author Posted 10 May 2012 Some great answers guys, thanks. Looking to get myself set up with my next paycheck. I'll keep you up to date.

Leicfox Posted 10 May 2012 Posted 10 May 2012 I got this a few months ago from Preloved £30 for the lot. http://www.preloved.co.uk/ Took photo before I put fish in...

Have I ruined everything by talking about model sunken ships? Don't waste your time with sunken ships - we've gone for a model of a Mini and some traffic lights in ours. Looks pretty cool especially when the fish swim in the car. We've also got a frog like the one below in ours. Something a bit different and that type of frog lives underwater so just has to come up for a breath of air every five minutes or so which means you don't need any special lights or any ledges for it to sit on. One downside is that is it did manage to jump out of the tank when cleaning it so now cleaning the tank out is a two person job. One to clean it and one to keep an eye on the frog.

I had one of those (African clawed frog) but had to take it back as it was eating my smaller fish. Is yours ok with the fish you have??
Finnegan Posted 13 June 2012 Author Posted 13 June 2012 I may be moving in the next couple of months so I have stalled my plans as I imagine rellocating your fish is a ballache, plus I may be able to fit something a bit bigger in the new pad. Definitely on hold, though, and not cancelled all together. Genuinely looking forward, some great enthusiasm on here properly convinced me.
Finnegan Posted 13 June 2012 Author Posted 13 June 2012 The urge to climb in that would be overwhelming.
James. Posted 13 June 2012 Posted 13 June 2012 If I went away for 2 weeks (or longer) what would be required to keep the aquarium going - would I just need someone to feed the fish or would there be cleaning, maintenance, etc required? Do some people buy auto fish feeders that are maybe set on timers or something? Continuing to look into this but my fiancée has got all sensible on me with talk about who's going to look after it while we're away, where is it going to go, etc.
Webbo Posted 13 June 2012 Posted 13 June 2012 You can get some slow release fish food tablets, that's what we used when I had some cold water fish.

Continuing to look into this but my fiancée has got all sensible on me with talk about who's going to look after it while we're away, where is it going to go, etc. It's one of those things that it depends who you ask what answer you get, but I've read recently that you can get away with not feeding your fish for quite a long time without too much trouble, and you certainly wouldn't need to get someone in to feed them every day. As for maintenance, most serious hobbyists advocate doing a partial water change weekly, but if this gets missed for a couple of weeks it won't be the end of the world. It's a good idea to have your lights on a timer anyway so you wouldn't have to worry about these. Generally speaking, the more complicated a set up you have (if you're using fertiliser, dosing with CO2, have high levels of light etc) the more attention it will need, but if you have a more straightforward 'low tech' set up they're a lot less demanding. Also, the bigger the tank the more stable it is and the longer it takes for stuff to go wrong
cambridgefox Posted 13 June 2012 Posted 13 June 2012 How goes the fish project ? Swimmingly .My little lads got a 60L biorb, with now only 1 fish,he got an Angel fish, pretty but aggressive as fook to other fish.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 19 October 2012 Posted 19 October 2012 In the spirit of my favourite Aircraft Porn thread being resurrected, it's only fair that I bring the thread on my other passion (slightly ahead of Tunnocks Teacakes) back to life as well. Does anyone have any fishy news? After fantasising about it for ages, I am poised to get my aquarium soon, possibly even this side of Christmas if I can sort out those pesky tradesmen and decorate like the wind
Nick Posted 19 October 2012 Posted 19 October 2012 Have Finners or James bought fish yet? I have concerns as to what they might get up to with them:
Bellend Sebastian Posted 19 October 2012 Posted 19 October 2012 I do stuff like that with my cat but that's different. I mean, that's just wrong
