davieG Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 Merc Digital cameras are being installed in Leicester to catch drivers who illegally use bus lanes in the city. Leicester City Council said the cameras will capture the number plates of offenders, who will face £60 fines. Monitoring at two sites has shown that hundreds of motorists regularly misuse the bus lanes, a city council spokesman said. The new cameras will come into operation on 16 June on Charles Street and Causeway Lane. The cameras will be gradually extended to bus lanes throughout the city and a roving camera car will also be used. Councillor Rory Palmer said: "This is a new initiative for Leicester, so we have taken technical advice from our colleagues in Nottingham who operate a similar system, although all the decision-making itself will still be done by Leicester City Council." Only buses, bicycles and hackney cabs are allowed to use the bus lanes. Warning notices will be handed out from 16 June until 1 July with fines starting from 2 July.
davieG Posted 4 June 2012 Author Posted 4 June 2012 It would be somewhat easy to conform to the rules if they were all actually 'bus lanes' for the same specific time rather than all being different. There's far too many signs on our roads with out having to look to see if the empty bus lane is actually in operation.
Thracian Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 The main effect of bus lanes is to add considerable danger to a route with vehicles having to unnecessarily pull into the adjacent lane. They should be banned one and all. For huge amounts of time they are empty. Leicester Council's action is just another means f grabbing indirect taxation and imposing yet more mothering. And the fines - for people using an empty lane to facilitate their next turn - are just what's needed when working people are struggling. What a political shitheap Leicester is. What shall we do today...I know, we'll kick the industrious as they go about their work.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 Bloody hell, Thrac, enforcing traffic laws is hardly kicking the industrious is it? What about the industrious folk who cannot afford to run a car and catch the bus instead, and have to put up with a shoddy service partly because it's compromised by the authorities failing to stop the bus lanes being clogged with cars that shouldn't be there? Or the cyclists who would be given some protection by a bus lane (where allowed to use it) if it was used properly, but instead seem to be so scared of riding on the road now they go on the pavement most of the time, therefore pissing ME off, which simply won't do. I know that the Leicester cycling lobby have been calling for this for ages and have been hassling the City Council with Freedom of Info requests etc about the number of convictions for bus lane infringements and maybe this is the beginning of the results of that pressure
Webbo Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 If we're going to have bus lanes then enforce them by all means. It really pisses me off when I'm stuck in the traffic queue outside Rushey Mead school only for some willy puller to drive halfway down the buslane to drop their kids and then force their way into the queue.
Rincewind Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 Could not be done if i bus lanes and cycle lanes were not in place. So yes let's blame the Labour Council for coming up with the idea. http://www.citizenseye.org/2012/06/04/phoenix-ride-for-schools/
Saxondale Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 I do see the point of bus lanes, but driving in built-up areas is becoming an exercise of intense concentration. Speed cameras, traffic light cameras, bus lanes (with various time windows), maniacal pedestrians, maniacal cyclists, maniacal other motorists, maniacal bus drivers, roundabouts with vague lane guides and maniacs who can't follow the lane guides and cut you up. It's like trying to fly a helicopter through the London Underground during rush hour.
Smudge Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 The motorist is an easy target but if you are going to have laws, enforce them. I wish they had the same tenacity to control street crime and antisocial behavior.
MooseBreath Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 Never mind that. How are speed bumps justified? If the limit is 30mph I should be able to drive at 30mph without the risk of damaging my car going over speed bumps. If you want people to drive slower, reduce the speed limit.

If the limit is 30mph I should be able to drive at 30mph without the risk of damaging my car going over speed bumps. If you want people to drive slower, reduce the speed limit. Because, under the 'use it or lose it' system of public sector budget-setting, speed bumps are a convenient way to spaff away any remaining funds come the end of the financial year.

So why haven't they put cameras down Charles Street rather than having the occasional organised bust and while we're at it lets have cameras on every road to catch all the many people I see using a phone especially those navigating traffic islands one handed>

Who's misusing a bus lane seems somewhat down the list compared to street robbery, assault and vandalism

It's actually a pity the cyclists lobby aren't so vigilant about the arseholes who nearly clean me up everyday when cycling along the pavement at breakneck speed or hurtling the wrong way down the one-way streets of Leicester City centre. While the uniforms pick on every motorist who might be trying to load their stall or stopping to briefly pick up a parcel ,they blithely ignore these wackos. Typical Labour hypocrites of course... Well, it's only a matter of time before someone gets killed or seriously hurt. Either by the bikes or the countless vehicles having to move from one car lane to another because theirs becomes a bus lane for a mere hundred metres or so. And when that happens I hope the authorities will be satisfied. And by the way, the cars were there - and our town bustling - way before the bus bus lanes were ever invented in the drive to force motorists out of the City Centre with the consequent devastation of trade and ruination of the High Street to the point where half the streets are now just avenues of charity shops. Your point about the shoddy bus service is taken. It was far better before bus lanes were ever dreamed of and having experienced the service for the first time in years barely six months ago i vowed "never again". Over two hours to get home from a city match. ad not cheap either. I pay for a family of kids to go to school each week - about three stops or 1.5 miles and it costs a fortune.

Where's your bus pass Thrac?
Thracian Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 Where's your bus pass Thrac? Yes, they'd love me climbing aboard with half a ton of luggage each working day!
Manwell Pablo Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 Alan Sheehan hates Bus Lanes. Levi Porter was unavailable for comment.

Yes I took the back road to Birstall village this morning and it was agony for my wife who already had a back injury. The road should have health warnings - for cars and people. Even at less than 20 mph the humps were pyramid basis and rolled the car every which way. If I'd been eating a carrot it would have been turned to soup within a mile. And for what? There wasn't a pedestrian to be seen anywhere.

No unfortuantly a few have moved on to bigger and better things, unlike Alan Sheehan and Levi Porter who have gone dramatically down hill. Given I get the bus into Leicester a lot I fully support this.
Daggers Posted 4 June 2012 Posted 4 June 2012 Yes mate, it's all very shocking. Would you like your slippers? I SAID 'WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR SLIPPERS'?
Thracian Posted 5 June 2012 Posted 5 June 2012 Given I get the bus into Leicester a lot I fully support this. Self, self, self!
Head Honcho Posted 5 June 2012 Posted 5 June 2012 I must say that nothing drives me crackers more then seeing bus lanes being abused. Especially by cab drivers.......... They should however only be buses only during rush hour absolute waste of road space at all other times.

Head Honcho Posted 5 June 2012 Posted 5 June 2012 I think taxis are allowed to use bus lanes. Only Hackney Cabs. School bus, coach and private hire drivers aren't allowed to use bus lanes but all seem to think they are.
