Saxondale Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 "I bloody love the Swiss" Most people will answer no. But what is the difference between saying this and saying "I bloody hate the Russians"? Both statements are generalisations based on race / nationality. One is a simply a positive and one a negative preference. Discuss.
Danno Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 Don't see it as racist at all, i'd consider something like I bloody hate W0gs as racist
Rincewind Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 Both are generalizations I would have thought. If you say to someone I hate you because you are a raghead Afghan terrorist even though I do not know anything about you' that may be regarded as racist. All French smell of onions is stereotyping. It is the assumption that a person is inferior to you because of their race colour or ethnic background that is the racist part.
stez Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 i guess as racism is based on hate, it's not. It's, perhaps, a generalisation.

Depends if, for example, you are only employing Swiss people ahead of every other nationality purely because the other people aren't Swiss, then it is racist to all people who are not of the Swiss "race". In that case it is similar to positive discrimination whereby people of ethnic minorities are given jobs ahead of more qualified English people to create a more diverse work force, or to make up quotas, it is still discrimination, but a different sort and not racism.
Zingari Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 i like women a lot more than men , does this make me sexist ?
Webbo Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 What about saying all black men have huge knobs? That isn't a negative stereotype.
Zingari Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 What about saying all black men have huge knobs? That isn't a negative stereotype. do you know this from experience ?
stez Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 do you know this from experience ? i doubt webbo would go with a black man
stez Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 i was wrong. does that make me a racist, misinformed or a misinformed racist?
FoxyPV Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 More xenophobia than racism. I've never had Russian chocolate, is it any good?
Saxondale Posted 8 June 2012 Author Posted 8 June 2012 I've never had Russian chocolate, is it any good? Is that a sick euphemism?

Kitchandro Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 Being called a racist or Xenophobic is supposed be a derogatory label, so we need to be careful. It should be based on hate and actual prejudice against a certain group of people, otherwise you are going to get loads of reasonable and fair minded people being called racists. Nobody has a problem with being prejudged positively, after all.

sphericalfox Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 More xenophobia than racism. I've never had Russian chocolate, is it any good? I've had Russian chocolate and it's vile. I've also had Polish chocolate and it's worse. People think they can go on their holidays and bring back token gifts for colleagues in the form of sweets that taste like arse. There needs to be a law written somewhere.
Rincewind Posted 8 June 2012 Posted 8 June 2012 i like women a lot more than men , does this make me sexist ? Depends on why you like them better.
Saxondale Posted 8 June 2012 Author Posted 8 June 2012 I have some Lithuanian brandy and it's appalling. The twats.
