Is this racist?

"I bloody love the Swiss"

Most people will answer no.

But what is the difference between saying this and saying "I bloody hate the Russians"?

Both statements are generalisations based on race / nationality. One is a simply a positive and one a negative preference.

Discuss.

Both are generalizations I would have thought. If you say to someone I hate you because you are a raghead Afghan terrorist even though I do not know anything about you' that may be regarded as racist. All French smell of onions is stereotyping. It is the assumption that a person is inferior to you because of their race colour or ethnic background that is the racist part.

Depends if, for example, you are only employing Swiss people ahead of every other nationality purely because the other people aren't Swiss, then it is racist to all people who are not of the Swiss "race".

In that case it is similar to positive discrimination whereby people of ethnic minorities are given jobs ahead of more qualified English people to create a more diverse work force, or to make up quotas, it is still discrimination, but a different sort and not racism.

What about saying all black men have huge knobs? That isn't a negative stereotype.

Being called a racist or Xenophobic is supposed be a derogatory label, so we need to be careful.

It should be based on hate and actual prejudice against a certain group of people, otherwise you are going to get loads of reasonable and fair minded people being called racists.

Nobody has a problem with being prejudged positively, after all.

I've had Russian chocolate and it's vile. I've also had Polish chocolate and it's worse. People think they can go on their holidays and bring back token gifts for colleagues in the form of sweets that taste like arse. There needs to be a law written somewhere.
