Bluefoxtim Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 I have to go to the centre of Birmingham tomorrow for a course. I can either get a bus, get a train and then have a quite lengthy walk to the venue and then repeat the journey to get home. (~£15) Leaving time to make sure I get the bus etc, could easily be 2 and a half hours each leg. Or I can just drive but it's a 90 mile round trip. We get paid 45p per mile, so I would be claming £45 + parking! That seems excessive. What would you do?
Benji Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Just get a second house in Birmingham. But seriously, don't worry about it. It's you inconvenience as much as theirs, just choose the one that suits your day the best and allows you to be most productive with your time, that's what company expenses are for.
Rincewind Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Won't they (the company) claim it back on their tax?
absolutelegend Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 £45 travel expense isn't excessive. Nobody has ever got a bus when on expenses.
Charl91 Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Just drive in. If you were going to get a first class flight, than you might be pushing it a bit. However driving is a fair use of expenses, it's what they're their for!
Captain... Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Petrol allowance is high because it covers things like wear and tear and not just the petrol. Drive if it is more convenient or if you go by train get a taxi instead of a long walk.
davieG Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Speaking as a former Training Manager for some part of my career I'd imagine compared to the cost of the course, your 'lost time' at work and one would hope the improvement you'll make in your work £45 is nothing. Is the course a full day one or part of the day, if the second going by car might enable you to put in a bit of a shift at work.
Houdini Logic Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 45p a mile is as decent as you're ever going to get - go for that. If you're going on a course which was advised by or will benefit your work then NEVER feel guilty about claiming expenses.
Rincewind Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 I was told I could claim my bus fair when I went to the work program place on Humberstone Gate. But I walked it so told them to give it to the treasuary as they are a bit skint at the moment.
Bluefoxtim Posted 16 July 2012 Author Posted 16 July 2012 The course is 10-4. Just thinking, the rush hour traffic could be an absolute nightmare. Google maps says an hour from Wigston to Birmingham City centre. No way will it take that!
AoWW Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Surely at those times you'll avoid the very worst of the rush hour traffic?
Bluefoxtim Posted 16 July 2012 Author Posted 16 July 2012 Surely at those times you'll avoid the very worst of the rush hour traffic? Well I'd be leaving at 8.15am. Traffic is always a bitch. It can take me 35 minutes to get to work one day, and almost an hour the next - despite leaving at the same time in the morning.
Rincewind Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 If you get there early there is always the geasy cafe.
MooseBreath Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 I would, and do, rape the expenses system for all that it's worth. 45p might sound a lot when it's just one trip, but as Shrapnel said, it also covers wear and tear, plus there's depreciation from extra mileage. If you do a lot of miles, you soon realise that it's not nearly as profitable as it first appears. I reckon I make about 20%-25% profit on mine although my rate is not as high as yours.
Captain... Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 I would, and do, rape the expenses system for all that it's worth. Why does that not surprise me Claiming mileage is not cheating the system, and is perfectly reasonable and normally works out cheaper and quicker than public transport.
Tomassi Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Leave at 7.30 and grab a coffee when your there! Agree with you on traffic its weird from Wigston
Tomassi Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Think of the Carbon emission Is that why Julia Guillard is so bent on Carbon Tax?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Is that why Julia Guillard is so bent on Carbon Tax? Yep, and the tax reaps the goverment billions.
Tomassi Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 Yep, and the tax reaps the goverment billions. Clever move. Safeguarding the countrys future!
Bayfox Posted 16 July 2012 Posted 16 July 2012 45p per mile is the top rate any company can pay. even doing 18mpg that would more than be enough to cover running costs.
Orkneyfox Posted 17 July 2012 Posted 17 July 2012 If it is a legitimate part of your terms and conditions then claim the rate that suits your circumstances best. If you travel by means other than car both you and your company are more inconvenienced.
