Wigan OS

Season opener at Robin Park Arena

The new Under 21 Premier Development League Two North gets underway at 2:00pm for Wigan Athletic as they host Leicester City at Robin Park Arena.

A young Latics squad will be lead by Graham Barrow and Dennis Lawrence who will be looking to build on a strong end to last season which saw them go unbeaten for six games, with victories over Bolton Wanderers, Swansea City and Sunderland.

Prices for today's game are:

Adults - £4.65

Concessions - £2.70

Hmmm Wigan charging an entrance fee to see this, I wonder if we'll do the same?

Will also be interesting to see where the home games will be played.

Under 21 fixtures - OS

That says Under 18 fixtures but I believe the Under 21s followed the same pattern.

http://www.wiganlati...overItLive.aspx

2-2 after going 2-0 down. Under 21's that is.

Side was Logan, Sesay (Pearson), Kennedy, Jones, Bolger, Taft, Gallagher, Dobbs, Blyth (Maduako), Hopper, Panayiotou

Scorers were Hopper and Panayiotou

Under 21 but Gallagher and Kennedy are playing? hmmm

3 overage players allowed. Both will not be in the Charlton squad ya'd think.

Under 18s report :-

No mention of goalscorers

Our academy has always been rather a strong point to the club, so let's hope there will be potential more 'home-grown' talent that will be in our starting 11 in the future :fc: .

16's won 3-0 so good start to the season

Under 14's unbeaten in Ireland and smashed Wolves 5-2 in the final game

Sounds like just recently that the Academy are starting to produce better players than we have for a few years so just hope Moore,Harry P and Hopper continue to progress.

Panayiotou scored 3 for the U18's as well.

Are there two of them or did he play in 2 games

OS u21 report

But the visitors would not be denied a share of the spoils as Hopper forced a mistake from Roman Golobart five minutes from time, before squaring for team-mate Panayiotou to slot home.

Or am I just confused?

If Kennedy is just going to play with the U21s all the time I am shocked he has not been sold.

He's cover for Konchesky and playing for the U21s (reserves 3 over age players) is the only way he's going to stay match fit and be ready to take over should Konch get injured suffer a loss of form.

Does anyone know who the new scholars are this season and if they're any good?

No where near as strong as last season

16's beat Derby 4-1 I think but as DavieG reported the 18's lost which I think might set the scene for the season - still if we get 1 or 2 that push on to be potential first teamers that would be a good result

If Konch got injured I bet another defender would step into LB ahead of Kennedy. I feel a bit for him, 27 and still playing with the kids. Just surprised he wouldn't rather just leave.

We seem to win so many games at youth level, yet for some reason we bring so few quality players through.

This is the first time we've had a proper reserve league for ages, you're allowed a maximum of three overage players to keep your backup options match fit. I'm sure he'd much rather be playing games than sitting around waiting for Konchesky to get dropped or injured or getting loaned out again. I'm sure he's come to terms with the fact that he's backup for the first team. We need more players like him, rather than ones who spit their dummies out because they're not playing every single game. Sounds like a model pro.

Or Kennedy finally got fed up with not playing, I'm sure Pearson was quite happy to keep him as cover which we're now actually short of at LB

Yeah quite possible. Wouldn't blame the guy.

City boss on the importance of the new Professional Development League, ahead of Monday night’s visit of Crewe…

City boss Nigel Pearson has welcomed the introduction of the new Under-21 Professional Development League, as it provides a platform for the Club’s young stars to pick up valuable experience in a competitive environment.

City host their first home game in the new competition on Monday night when Crewe Alexandra visit King Power Stadium (kick-off 7pm), following away trips to Wigan Athletic and Derby County.

The previous two games have provided opportunities for youngsters such as Tom Hopper, Harry Panayiotou and Jacob Blyth to get match minutes, while competition rules also allow for a limited number of over-age players to be involved.

That should open the door for the likes of defender Zak Whitbread, whose involvement on Monday night was confirmed by Pearson at the weekend, as the summer signing from Norwich City builds on his match fitness.

“It is very important,” Pearson said of the new league, introduced as part of the new Elite Player Performance Plan.

“When you look at players from the Academy, some players are ready for the step up to the first team and some need that opportunity. Playing in a competitive league gives the younger professionals that extra stepping stone.

“You have to recognise that some players do need that extra step.

“I think it is always better to play in a competitive league. It is about winning games and games that have more meaning are much more helpful for players’ development.”

Monday night’s game at King Power Stadium is open to the public and kicks off at 7pm. Admission, payable on the turnstiles, is priced £3 for Adults, £1 for Under-18s and free for accompanied Under-8s
