Rincewind Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Maybe part of the reason, that time was the beginning of the modern tech age. Computers, VCR's, etc. were just being introduced. Now we have all those and sometimes it is hard to see how much further we can go. I'm just an oldish man living in a time that is for the future generation. Good luck to them.
Reynard Bleu Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 A lot of them were still driving Mk I Ford Escorts last time I was over there I remember trying to buy some trousers in Dunedin and the assistant offered to show me their Cavalry Twills. I thought it he meant a packet of fags! He wore a cravat - nuff said.
purpleronnie Posted 24 August 2012 Author Posted 24 August 2012 YOU HATE ENGLAND NOOOO I DONT. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

I don't think the people in this modern tech age are going to be particularly healthy. They spend most of it staring at plasmas and LCDs. Sadly for the last ten years or so, that includes me.
Haydos Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 a) 'Kids' most certainly do not dress the same. There are hundreds of shit 'fashions' I see on the high street, all of which make them look like dickheads. b) Can't really comment as I'm awful with regards to politics but I fail to see how you can complain at it being bland. You have the Tories/Lib dems situation, recession, expenses scandals, Boris. c) Football...I can maybe see where you're coming from in some instances. But guess what? Hillsborough isn't going to happen again. But I guess it would be great if it did, it would make everything a little less bland. There is so much fantastic football on offer these days, you can watch a huge percentage of games and the quality is much, much improved. And for excitement, just take last season, one of the best ever. d) What has any of that got to do with being bland? e) I was only born it 1989 but from what I've seen television was absolutely dire before the 80's/90's. There's plenty of good shows on if you stop looking for stuff to moan at and watch something other than 'reality tv'. Cheer up or things are probably going to go even more downhill

Cheer up or things are probably going to go even more downhill I think there's plenty of quality football, but the divide between the fans and the players probably exists due to the nature of the beast. It's the price we pay for. Indifference to a good thing has to come at some point.
Captain... Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I think the problem with most of these points is technology, and overkill/overexposure, we have access to so much in the way of news and information and sharing, it is no longer exciting to buy a CD, watch a football match on the TV, or even buy a newspaper. Every time I buy a newspaper I have already read most of the news on the internet, or heard it on TV or the radio, with a CD, I will have already listened to half the songs on the internet before I buy it, even live music and festivals there is just overkill and music scenes are either dying out or not where I live. there are plenty of good shows on TV, but there is no excitement, the closest I got to being excited by something on TV was when I was waiting every week for the new episode broadcast in the US to be ripped and put on the internet and watch it before it gets taken down, but now you can pretty much anything anywhere any time. Did you see the new 'insert name of good program here' last night? No I skyplussed it, or I'll watch it on Iplayer, or I saw it on the internet 3 weeks ago, it is not the same as it was, you don't really have watercooler moments any more. Even in sport, did you see the United match last night, no I was watching City on ESPN, or I was watching the live stream of Rovers. The same goes with books and e-readers, Technology is great, but it takes the magic and mysticism and the sense of togetherness, and individuality is all lost. I used to hate people with their phones out all the time looking up things on the internet, but now I am just as bad. Computer games were one of the few saviours, but even then they are designed to be played over the internet with strangers and not 2-player split screen any more, they are also designed more and more to be never ending wastes of time rather than rewards based games, you play it you complete it you put it down and play something else, now you have to download the add on packs, complete all the bonus missions to unlock the extra bit that makes no real sense to the rest of the story, but it will give you a tag on your gamer profile so everyone can see you did it.
MooseBreath Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I'll do a swap with you if you want. After 12 years in Australia I've had my fill of the place. Give me history, 500 year old pubs, decent football, sense of humour and proper green grass any day of the week. Come to think of it, if anyone wants to know what it was like in the past, come here. Parts of Oz remind me of England in the 1970s, in a strangely quaint way. Good deal. Hope you enjoy our new winter, winter, spring, autumn seasonal line up. I'll be on the beach.
lavrentis Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Another purpleronnie moaning post? Nothing to see here
OzFox Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Good deal. Hope you enjoy our new winter, winter, spring, autumn seasonal line up. I'll be on the beach. Aaah, cold dark nights, city lights, the crunch of frost under foot. Never having to worry about melanomas and sharks. Sigh.
purpleronnie Posted 24 August 2012 Author Posted 24 August 2012 Another purpleronnie moaning post? Nothing to see here oi. Maybe I should post a thread about how much I love this country....
ACF Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I really enjoyed Australia from a nature point of view, but I did find it culturally lacking, especially as I arrived in Darwin after 2 months in Asia. Well there's your first mistake.
Webbo Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I suppose the the grass is always greener on the other side. When I was 15/16 there were so many different music genres, if that's not too pretentious a word, mod, ska, rockabilly, punk ,grebo. You had to be in one of these group and there was a sort of rivalry between us. It did seem a lot more fun than nowadays but my dad thought exactly the same about what I was listening to. As for football, people are looking back with rose tinted specs. There was plenty of boring, negative football back then too.
Captain... Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Well there's your first mistake. Not really, was the shortest flight from Singapore and did a great tour through the outback to Uluru, but yeah Darwin as a town/city was pretty horrendous.
purpleronnie Posted 24 August 2012 Author Posted 24 August 2012 Kids need to get together and create something. PUNKS NOT DEAD ITS JUST SLEEPING.
MooseBreath Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I don't think there is anything wrong with the music scene to be honest. Plenty of great new music around if you're willing to look past the surface. Not all of it just a rehash of the past either. Dubstep for example, while influenced by dnb and breaks, is pretty much a brand new genre. That doesn't happen very often.
Rincewind Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 No one remember the Teddy Boys? I missed it by about 10 years. I have a mate who tells a story about buying a fantastic pair of suede shoes then refused entry in a pub because he was wearing them. He and his mates were also refused when they wore their drainpipe suits. He says in the 50's pubs were designed and catered for the older generation. Today it's the other way round. Older pub goers do it mainly in the day. With footballers there was a time (going back a lot longer here) when they used to work down the pit then play football then join the fans down the pub on a Saturday night. I don't see how they could have been fitter and healthier. As far as I am aware it was 10 men rushing up the pitch at the same time. If they kept they ball they might score if they lost it the opposition 10 would rush up the field. If they didn't trip over their shorts they might have scored. I've embraced the modern era somewhat. Went from vinl to cassettes to CD's to MP players to downloading so I have had to adapt over the years.

Thats another thing why are kids so bloody scruffy thesedays. I dont think downloading music is adapting, it may be convenient but I still love rooting around for records....again downloading = boring
