Ilkeston_Fox Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Got a question on your mind that doesn't require a new thread? Ask them here I'm off to Germany tomorrow and intend to wear my poppy whilst over there. Has anyone been before around this time of year and do Germans remember their war dead like we do? I don't want to offend anyone over there and certainly don't want to whilst I'm visiting war memorials, concentration camps etc.
AoWW Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 I have a question but I can't decide whether it's quick enough to go in the 'Quick Questions' thread or whether it should go in the 'Questions' thread.
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 7 November 2012 Author Posted 7 November 2012 Thought I'd seen a thread somewhere, figured it'd been deleted or something, I couldn't find anything when I searched (hence the thread), perhaps a merge is in order then. What's your question?
AoWW Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Typical bloke - bloody useless at looking for stuff. (Like the other questions thread that's on the front page of Gen Chat!) I might keep this one though - then I can moan at people who put the wrong length question in the wrong thread.

I go to Munich a fair bit as I have a friend out there, his advice (he's German) is just to not mention the war, you're usually met with a really awkward, embarrassed look.

Cheers mate, I'll not be mentioning the war unless someone asks me something first. I forgot about the whole FIFA poppy saga.

Did you really advise "Don't mention the war!"?

21st Century Fox Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Did you really advise "Don't mention the war!"? I know, I couldn't think of any other way of putting it. I also gave my friend a look when he used those exact words.

21st Century Fox Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 I'm not sure if it varies around Germany though, it can be so different in attitudes, culture, etc. from place to place. I wouldn't goose step anywhere put it that way

A few recognised it when I was there. No probem though. The most embarrassing thing is when a German apologises for the war. Happened to me, first time im my life when I didn't know what to say. Made me cringe like never before, worse than when Ken Livingstone broke down crying when apologising for the slave trade.
