James. Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 You do realise that is in reference to Idi Amin's expulsion of Asian families from Uganda in 1972 right?

pSinatra Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 "one nondescript Midlands town"???? I have heard about this advert before. It's interesting that they suggest that so many Ugandans came to Leicester because of the advert. Without it, they would have never heard of Leicester. I would suggest that we had the types of industry in which they were more likely to find work.
James. Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 I did read the article yes Apologies I do you a disservice.
lavrentis Posted 29 January 2013 Author Posted 29 January 2013 Apologies I do you a disservice. Think you have got me confused with someone else
Finnegan Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 Think you have got me confused with someone else What, a UKIP supporter?
lavrentis Posted 29 January 2013 Author Posted 29 January 2013 What, a UKIP supporter? Of course that makes me a great big racist The irony of it is that UKIP support controlled immigration and would not discriminate against and actively encourage non-EU migrants.
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 Interesting that the conditions were so near the "tipping point" in 1972 and 40 years later we're still fine...
Guest MattP Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 They should just post a picture of Charles Street up and that would stop 95% of potential people wanting to come here.
pSinatra Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 They should just post a picture of Charles Street up and that would stop 95% of potential people wanting to come here. It looked better then than it does now
Webbo Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 It looked better then than it does now C&A, corpo buses, those were the days.
Guest MattP Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 It looked better then than it does now It actually does doesn't it?
purpleronnie Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 Whats wrong with charles street, what are people expecting? Its a run of the mill city street...people act as if its some crime infested derelict street in camden, NJ, or flint michigan.
Parafox Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 1950's Charles Street... Not a Ugandan in sight. "The sudden expulsion by the Ugandan leader Idi Amin of the entire Asian population of Uganda in 1972, saw almost 30,000 dual passport-holders arrive in Britain. Almost all of whom were granted asylum in the UK. In November 1972, Panorama went to Leicester to gauge how the city was coping with the new arrivals in the midst of its established immigrant communities". I think we coped pretty well. Nasty cnut In 1972, Idi Amin declared on his appointment as general in Uganda, that all Ugandan Asians were to leave within 90 days. Many of them came to Leicester,

Compared to most English/European cities it's a fcuking dump.

They played that Panorama again on the BBC website a few years. I made a special point of watching it as we were living off the Belgrave Rd at the time(I was hoping I'd see my mam crossing the road or something). Fascinating stuff.
