The Year Of The Fox Posted 8 February 2013 Posted 8 February 2013 I'd agree electricians tend to be more professional than plumbers. However I would say in my experience plumbers are the worst rogues of all. If I had my way they would be the first we'd look at in connection with selective breeding. So why do you say this then? Sure there are more ways you can bodge things up with in plumbing and there are more things to go wrong (valves, pumps etc) as well as complicated legislation, which can baffle plumbers to say nothing of the customer. I agree there are people out there giving us a bad name, but they never seem to make documentaries on cowboy customers who won't pay, want something for nothing, or claim something was working prior to the plumber starting work (when it never was working in the first place) I wonder how many people who moan about plumbers only moan because of a price quoted for a new heating system and radiators, (say about £2k) yet then think nothing of paying that for a week all inclusive somewhere!
davieG Posted 8 February 2013 Author Posted 8 February 2013 Update, after spending a week without CH, reminded me of when I first got married I found a plumber/heating engineer, a brother of a poster on here. Got a decent quote and he fitted a new boiler last Tuesday, so far so good, no new flue required and although he had doubts about the gas feed pipe being of sufficient capacity after testing no up-sizing was needed. As a big bonus I asked him how much would it be to fit a new gas fire the other one being 'broken' for the last 2/3 years as informed by 2 previous plumbers. He had a look at it and had it working within 5 minutes and then serviced as part of the original quote, e.g for nothing. So a saving there for me of £300+. He was prompt, finished the job within the specified time, explained everything, was tidy and friendly with out over doing it. I'm very happy with the results and my house definitely seems warmer and would be happy to recommend him. www.ignitegasservices.com (not to be confused with .co.uk) 01530490019 Lee Baines
Webbo Posted 8 February 2013 Posted 8 February 2013 Agreed , but not as bad as painters and decorators , they are the worst of the bib 'n brace mafia . Electricians are very honest though It's a well known fact that painters and sparkies are natural enemies. Notice the grubby hand print on a freshly painted ceiling or when they bang holes in a wall when they can't find their fecking wires.

And I was right with the flue!
davieG Posted 8 February 2013 Author Posted 8 February 2013 you see, we're not all bad! And I was right with the flue! The main feed pipe was close to the limit and I don't think either of us wanted to have to replace it as it would have been a bastard of a job and expensive
The Year Of The Fox Posted 8 February 2013 Posted 8 February 2013 The main feed pipe was close to the limit and I don't think either of us wanted to have to replace it as it would have been a bastard of a job and expensive I'm guessing it's all in 15mm then (half inch) rather than 22mm which is what is usually supposed to be taken quite close to the boiler then reduced down to 15mm to connect onto the boiler. But if he's done the gas rate and its ok then happy days!

The Year Of The Fox Posted 8 February 2013 Posted 8 February 2013 Have you changed the taps El Empty?
BoneDog Posted 8 February 2013 Posted 8 February 2013 The last plumbers we had round were pro's. Drank slightly too much tea though. Did a new boiler in the loft for instant hot water and that and it's been excellent. Not started my taps yet. Will watch those two new vids before I start. Have you changed the taps El Empty? Have I piss! Next hour or two I'm getting them on.
ithuriel Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 This thread is a bit dated now so is the info still usable? Need a boiler serviced, Worcester Bosch and the guys that used to do it for me closed down their Leicester branch. Every time I've tried to get someone decent the past few years they let me down. Have looked online and cross checked a few businesses with the safety register to find they do not show up on there even though they have the logo on their site
Rincewind Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 I can't see many plumbers saying there are not.
Buce Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 A trustworthy plumber? Hmm, like an honest politician... good luck with that.

Strokes Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 True enough. Are you a plumber? No electrician, mostly doing fire alarms at the moment though.

Buce Posted 19 October 2014 Posted 19 October 2014 Most of the time . At least you're honest: ever thought about taking up politics? You'd be a breath of fresh air.
