Gutted, so nearly put a tenner on George at 12/1 last Tuesday.

I had a bet with someone that he would be named George Arthur. So close!

Funny that our England's patron saint is St George, but it took until the 18th century until a George reigned as monarch, and a German at that!

The real St. George was in actual fact a Roman, but very few people know that, and just see him as a medieval knight slaying a dragon.

Don't spoil it for the flag wavers,  They have to believe in something. :)

I knew that, wasn't he a merchant or something? Bit different to slaying dragons, selling tat down the market lol

So he was a medieval Del Boy. Had a three legged horse as well I suppose.

Democracy, Identity, Freedom, Pride, Patriotism.

What a terrible thing to believe in...

(btw 99% of us don't really believe he slayed a dragon you know) :o

i think it was a misprint or summat and he actually layed a dragon .

I've layed a few dragons in my time on "grab a granny night"  :) I was never the choosy sort .

With you on every one apart from the last.

I love this country more than any other, but for exactly that reason I insist upon the right to criticise her perpetually.

So perhaps that makes me a patriot, but not a nationalist?

Interesting.

Have you ever read "progressive patriot" by Billy Bragg? Wasnt my cup of tea obviously but I appreciated the content, I think you may enjoy it.

You might like it, written just after the 2005 bombings from recollection, a left wingers perspective on how proud you can be to be British.

Sounds like my cup of tea - I'll see if I can scope out a copy.

To that end, as far as centrists/left-wingers who show patriotism go I like Tony Parsons columns. Yeah, they're in the Mirror, but he writes from much much further to the right than any of the other columnists. Find myself agreeing with a lot of what he says.

I don't get the Mirror but if I see one I'll have a look!

Sure it will be on Amazon, let me know what you think after a read.

His columns are usually on Saturdays, but you can find them on the website, if you can find your way through all the McCluskey propaganda.  :P

I'll get back to you on that book! Thanks for the tip.

Edit: It's a decent price on Amazon so I placed an order for it.

Long to reign over us! :scarf::chant::englandsmile4wf:

O Lord our God arise

Scatter her enemies

And make them fall

Confound their politics

Frustrate their knavish tricks

On Thee our hopes we fix

God save us all

Can't wait to whip this out.

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade, May by thy mighty aid, Victory bring. May he sedition hush, and like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush, God save the King.

Is that a copy and paste I see? Not made the effort to learn the words? Better things to do with your time perhaps?

It was meant as a bit of a joke, this thread is ripe for a bit of ribbing after all, but I think you should know them. I'd certainly make the effort to learn the words to my national anthem.

EDIT: It dawns on me that those lyrics don't really fit the tune of the song in question, I suppose they're from somewhere else in which case I'll let you off. Sorry, Rod.
