indierich06 Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 Spot on, there was an assumption that NFP has achieved more than Sven and yet we're still rotting in this division. It's not an assumption at all, NP has achieved more than Sven at Leicester. He might not have gotten us promoted yet, but he managed to keep us in the playoffs for 95% of last season and we finished as playoff semi finalists. That's more than Sven ever did, who lavished millions of pounds on a squad that never entered the playoff places once during his time here.

We're still in this division though aren't we so he hasn't actually achieved more than Sven and has had 2 full seasons which Sven never had. Sven was certainly no success but I don't believe Pearson has proved himself yet, I'm hoping this season will be different.

The counter argument is Sven wasn't given time etc. What Pearson has or hasn't done is irrelevant to a Sven thread. If Pearson had got us relegated last season it wouldn't have made Sven's reign any more or less successful. Sven's reign when assessed as an isolated period of management was not a success. We were never once in the play offs and when we were on a good run and looked like we were going to get there we bottled it. This was a characteristic of Sven's team, anything other than perfect playing conditions and meek opposition we as a team and especially his signings didn't look up for it. Gritty performances away such as Sheffield United or Bristol city it was the old guard such as Weale and King and Waghorn and Berner who would prove decisive. When we were rolling over dross like Derby, Yak and pals were scintillating, but we all remember what happened at Ipswich. We had no fight. We had a talented group of individuals but no team. In his 12 months at the club a ridiculous number of player came through the door. Naughton Cunningham Davies Vassel Bamba Kirkland Bednar PVA Mee Bruma Kamara Yak Uchechi Ricardo Mills Beckford Danns Peltier Ball Johnson Fernandes Nugent Kasper Konch Paintsil Sean Saint Ledger 26 players in 12 months, regardless of how much we paid for them, that is just ridiculous. I've probably missed a couple.
MattyFromLE Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 It would have been interesting to see what Pearson would have done with the money Sven spent.

The club had a GREAT chance of really improving and Sven spent (wasted) so much money on too much dross. £15 million pounds, given to Pearson (or to many other managers), would have surely gotten us a better squad than Sven did.

The one time we have serious investment and if anything we actually get worse with it. Only Leicester.

Exactly. In fairness to Sven, he has signed some really important players for us, having said that - most of his signings have been useless. Ball, Johnson, Paintsil, Ricardo, Van Aanholt, Bruma the list goes on. Generally Pearson's signings have been well scouted and usually fit within in or around the core of the team. Ahhh! Painful thinking where we could be if Pearson hadn't have been forced out.

The large numbers are due to the fact that he was given the job of building two separate sides, in his first season he was told to get the club promoted so brought in numerous loan players to do that, and failed. The following season was when he started to bring in the players he actually wanted long term and who he felt were good enough to get us promoted to the PL and keep us there.

I firmly believe that if Pearson had been given that money we'd have been promoted and would still be a Premier League club now.
hackneyfox Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 Compared to Sven Pearson hasn't had a lot to spend, compared to other Championship managers he hasn't been short of cash to splash. He's had 3 attempts at promotion with us and 1 with Hull, let's hope he has more success this time.

Gosh Bilo! With the quality of your previous post and the accolades it received, I feel honoured that you replied to mine!
Corky Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 The one time we have serious investment and if anything we actually get worse with it. Only Leicester. Second, Taylor's £25 million to help take us down, and a lot of that was self-generated.

Of course Sven isn't solely to blame, but he was the manager of the 'Sven project' and whilst others must take their blame along with Sven for the way in which we signed so many players and the price we paid, he must take the majority of the blame for the quality of the players, and the inability to mould a team out of the money he had and the players he acquired with it.

I'm not disagreeing with any of that I just pointed out that there was a reason as to why he signed 26 players, pretty sure that if he'd been told to get us promoted within 2 years that things wouldn't have been as manic.
