Hughes Set To Miss Sheffield Trip

Stephen HughesManager Craig Levein has revealed mixed news on the injury front ahead of Saturday's Championship opener against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane (12:45pm).

The Foxes go into the game already without the suspended Danny Tiatto, after the club captain was penalised for clocking up too many bookings at the end of last season.

And it now looks like midfielder Stephen Hughes (pictured) will also miss the game with an ankle injury, while Patrick Kisnorbo is still recovering from a minor knee operation.

But strike David Connolly has shaken off a groin injury and is fit to play - handing Levein a major boost ahead of the highly anticipated clash.

Levein said: "David is fine. He has been back in training for a week now and has shown no reaction to his injury.

"Stephen is getting better, although there is one tiny area at the front of his ankle that is causing him discomfort. A specialist is going to put some sort of injection into it to see if that will take away the pain.

"David will be involved on Saturday, and we hope that Stephen Hughes and Patrick Kisnorbo are back in training next week. We are just about there.

"Hopefully, by the time the Ipswich game comes around, we will have a full strength squad."

That does not surprise me at all. I thought the thought of either of them playing this weekend was rather (excessively) optimistic!

Get well soon, Stephen and Patrick K.!

I reckon that it will be Dublin De Vries up front which isnt the best of starts, but i think that our midfield will be the main worry. Without Hughes we wont have the presence to push forward as much as we may have liked.

Our emphasis has to be in the middle and keeping the ball. If we win the midfield battle then we can counter and pick a goal like that. If we dont concede in the first half then we have a good chance of holding the draw or sneaking a victory. I will be very happy with 1-1.

Not to worry too much about Hughes though, as long as it is heals, we will be back to strength. we just have to do best with what we have!

I wasn't expecting him to start anyway to be honest, given the lack of training and matches he's had. Could've made an impact from the bench though, so it's a shame.

Good news that Conners is fit though, that was my major concern.

Perfect chance for Williams to stake his claim in midfield. Once Tiatto, Kisnorbo and Hughes are available, Williams could find himself relegated to the bench if he doesn't turn in the performances.

Williams and Joey MUST improve on last season, or we're getting dicked on.

Agreed, both showed flashes of quality but they need pull their socks up this season.

I think Williams suffers from lazyness in games sometimes, at times he looks like he just can't be bothered.

Agree probably more accurate to say

I think Williams shows interest in games sometimes, at times he looks like he can be bothered.

I have grave fears over the midfield for the next few games, hell we don't even have someone we can put on the bench. Even if Williams & Joey click they are both inconsistent, I've yet to see either of them perform over 90 minutes never mind 2, 3, 4 games

Williams will do well tomorrow, I think he often plays better away from home in my opinion. As do most of our players, but I think Williams will be geared up for tomorrow, he know's he's got competition for his place and he'll be wnating to stamp his authority. He was a class above everyone else on the pitch against Celtic bar Weso and if he can find that form more often we'd have the best midfielder in the league on our hands. It's down to Levein to demand that from him every game, or atleast get stuck in every game because he is actually a good battler when he wants to be.

There is no way that Connolly won't start tomorrow unless he has a re-occurance of his injury in training. He'll either start or won't be in the squad at all, trust me.

I can't ****in wait!!!!!!!!!

I think the Celtic game illustrated that - He was hassling Lennon all over the pitch, and even won the ball from him on a few occasions. Consistency is the key word with Williams. Last season he would often hide in the second half of games, attaching himself to a marker and not looking for a ball. That has to change otherwise he'll find himself on the bench.

i tink dublin and de vries will start but i am not happy about it, hopefully they will soon stop being a pairing and will take it in turns alongside connolly

I can't understand how you think this will happen when Connolly is fit. As i've said, the ONLY reason why these two have played up front together was because Connolly was injured and we haven't got another striker. Connolly is fit according to himself and Levein so he'll play from the start.
