NewquayFox Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 Simple way of training Referees & Assistants when i was involved was to put a few sheets of loo roll on the ground then roll a ball up to it within a cm with the ball overhanging when looking from above, when you see how far the ball is actually away from the line where it touches the ground is quite a distance... Take a ball and some loo roll with you to the KP next home game and try it out... ;0)
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 Always the critic..... ;0/ but you have made your point very well. I think a lot just think that when the ball is touching the ground if there is grass showing it's out which is not the case. Also when the penalty is being taken the ref looks tobe telling a player/players not to move forward which their number 8 did. Should it have been retaken ?
Woollett's Wellies Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 But it was out surely! Everyone knows the ref was against Middlesborough all afternoon! That, and the weather of course. Loved this from Ayala as his excuses..... The Spaniard was muscled aside as David Nugent took the ball out of play before cutting it back for the opener then he was penalised for the free-kick that led to the killer second. “For the first when the whistle went I was sure he would give a goal kick because I clearly saw the ball was out,†he said. “And for the second I thought it was the wrong decision. "If it had been the opposite way it would not have been a free-kick. “It felt like everything went their way. "When that happens you have to try to move on but it was very frustrating for us. “We had played well but did not take our chances and then two big decisions go against us.†He went on to say. " Even before the game I got a text from the Ref to say Leicester had insisted I couldn't go to the game on the team bus but had to use my bike! As if that wasn't bad enough, when I got to the ground the Ref had locked the shitter"!!!! I may have made the last bit up but the rest is a direct quote from the Middlesborough Evening Gazette.
NewquayFox Posted 27 January 2014 Author Posted 27 January 2014 Assistant Ref watches the keeper doesn't take a step too many forward off his line (they always do) whilst the Ref watches players encroaching, if defenders encroach and its saved its retaken (very rare) if the attacking players encroach and its saved, carry on with play but if its scored its retaken. So many Refs can't be arsed though and players always encroach, Nugents pen on Saturday was just crap and on one else to blame but him.....
yorkie1999 Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 Is the rule all of the ball has to cross all of the line? If it is that means you could potentially see 100mm of grass between the line and the centre of the ball from a camera on the half way line.

Mack Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 The whole of the ball needs to be over the line in order for it to be out, not just the bit touching the ground. With this in mind and having watched it back a few times it looks in to me, or certainly close as damn it anyway. It's one of those that if the linesman disallows a goal for the scoring team feel hard done by and the defending team the other way around for the same reasons. We seem to be getting the rub of the Green here and there this season, and that's one key element that any team needs if they are going to get promoted.

In that's so then, If a player's taking a corner and the crowd are yelling about the ball being in the wrong place, is it ok for the ball to be slightly out of the corner quadrant?

I'm a firm believer that for the most part you make your own luck. If Nuge doesn't try and get the ball then it's a non-event anyway but his determination to get it meant we had that "luck"
LcFc_Smiv Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 For me if players can take corners as far off of the corner arc as they do, then the ball Nugent pulls back is just as 'in play'. Ayala had no intention of playing the ball, he paid the price for it.

If Nuge doesn't try and get the ball then it's a non-event anyway but his determination to get it meant we had that "luck" But if the ball didn't go out, it wasn't luck, it was poor defending and a striker not willing to give up chasing a ball down.

As I understand it yes. As long as part of the ball is over the line then that's fine, even if the part touching the ground isn't.

That's the point I'm making really. It's not "luck" as such but that's how it's seen by many because the referee gave the decision our way.
NewquayFox Posted 27 January 2014 Author Posted 27 January 2014 Try the loo roll & ball test folks, you will see how far the ball actually has to travel to be 'out'....

Captain... Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 But if the ball didn't go out, it wasn't luck, it was poor defending and a striker not willing to give up chasing a ball down. We were lucky that we got one of the few linesman in the league that can a) see and b) knows the rules of the game. These are given out incorrectly all the time, and it pisses me off, so yeah we got a bit of luck.
yorkie1999 Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 After further reviewing it, capturing the exact moment in precise detail and running the triangulations through the latest software, i can confirm the ball was definitely still in play.
Ashley Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fUfuKqW4W-I Out of play?

Yes. The ball can "overhang" the line, as in it can be over the line, but as long as part of it is still overhanging the line when you look at it from above it is in play/in the quadrant/not over the line.
Captain... Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fUfuKqW4W-I Out of play? You mean Nugent before he passes to Knocky for King's goal? Not out of play.
Captain... Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 I think the problem is we have spent the last 48 years believing this crossed the line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Uhe_l1h3w8 It didn't.
Ashley Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 You mean Nugent before he passes to Knocky for King's goal? Not out of play. Yes.
