Schlupp in the Premiership

*First of all, if mods feel this isn't worthy of a new topic please merge but I feel as though this is a different discussion*

So Jeff has been performing well at LB in recent weeks. We're coming to the business end of the season though and it looks like the Premiership is coming up next season. So what's going to happen to Jeff?

Lets say he continues this good form until the end of this season and cements his place at LB. What do you guys think regarding his future? Personally I think it would be quite a gamble with him at LB in the Prem and I don't think Nige would be comfortable with him there as first choice either given his age, inexperience and overall ability. Assuming we bring another LB in (whether that be Konchesky or a replacement) where does that leave Jeff?...On loan?...On the bench?...Got rid of?

He's still a young lad with a lot of potential as a footballer and Nigel seems to be doing pretty good things with him but I can't see there being any room for him if we're promoted this year.

I would stick with him for the time being and see how it goes. If he plays well for the rest of the season, I wouldn't be concerned if he started in the PL.

In his favour: He's got power, pace and determination in abundance.

The negatives: Sometimes he can be a bit clumsy on the ball and sometimes his awareness isn't the best.

It all depends if Jeff wants to be a LB or if he wants to move in order for him to play as a striker, because let's be honest, he hasn't got a chance of getting in our team as a striker.

He's got to speak to Pearson have a proper honest discussion and then when they've decided what he best position will be for the future be sent out on loan to play a full season there in the Championship.

Whilst he's good and versatile, which would be good for the team in the Prem. For our and his long term ambitions he needs a full season playing in his future position.

It's such an odd situation that I find it very interesting. Someone who appears to have played as a striker for their whole career (unless anyone suggests otherwise) is now proving to be a very capable left back.

I think what you have written is bang on the money, he will need to have a big talk with Nige to decide which direction he wants to take his career. It's hard for us because we can't see any of the goings on behind closed doors but I'm keeping an eye on how this plays out.

I'd expect us to splash a little cash on a new left back in the summer. Jeff will keep getting occasional chances to impress and if he takes them then who knows, maybe he can force his way in.

There will be a few difficult decisions all over the pitch. We'll want to bring in new, better players, but who do you drop after a season like this?

He's really impressed me in these last two games. Better than Konchesky's been.

But... it's hard to really say because we've been in complete control in both games. I'm not saying he hasn't played his part, but when he's doing it in more challenging games when we're on the back foot (and it will happen), then that's when he'll win me over.

But good on him. He was quality.

We are going to need to buy smart and well next year in most positions.  LB is a key one to bring in some competition for both PK and Schlupp.

We have a relatively small squad (been very lucky with injuries this season which has contributed to our great season) for a PL team.  I would expect a number of free transfers and targeted buys, but Konchesky and Schlupp are a good start for us at LB, but expect at least one more to come in.

RBs & LBs are like wingers in the Prem. Look at a RB/LB 'heatmap'.

He needs playing there until end of season & thru the summer.

Do we sign someone or have we uncovered the next Ashley Cole & he just needs experience & coaching especially when it comes to positioning when opposition is breaking or he's on the far post for defensive headers o

He has huge potential as a LB but will need a good run of games before developing the positional sense and general awareness required. Konchesky has played for England and already Jeff is not too far behind him, just give him a chance.

This. I think the prem would suit him more if anything.

Seeing as we rejected a 3m? Bid for him, nige obviously has a plan for him!

Wasn't £3m.

Bring in Cresswell, loan out Schlupp (To play Left back in the championship, not striker) then if we stay up, Konch can go and Schlupp can come up and fight for a place

signed a big new contract recently, would be costly

If Bertrand becomes available i'd much rather have him. Our defence is the main area of concern for me if/when we get promoted. Only problem is I think Bertrand may well be part of a deal to take Luke Shaw to Chelsea from the Saints.

I think we are all overrating him at left back a lot based on the Ipswich and Charlton games.

He had very very little to do in both yet still have the ball away with no awareness at times that could have been seriously punished by sides with any attacking intent.

I still see him as a striker/winger. You don't score a hat trick on your debut if you are a left back

I think he would be a useful player in the Premier League for us because, of the fact he can play LB, on the wing or as a striker. I'd keep him and sell Konchesky in the summer, because he can be a liabillity at times despite his PL experience, he is not good enough to play at that level anymore. But, we need a quality left back perhaps Aaron Cresswell or Jonathan Parr.

He's looked very capable recently, it'd perhaps better to reserve judgement for when he comes up against a better winger.
