ramaiya2 Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I have just been going through all the teams that went up as Champions over the last 5 years - Cardiff - 2012 2013 Reading - 2001 2012 QPR - 2010 2011 Newcastle - 2009 2010 Wolves - 2008 2009 The only two that are still there Cardiff and Newcastle. Don't think Cardiff will be there next season. What did Newcastle do right to stay there? .
An Away Move Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 When I see 'Newcastle' and 'doing things right' in the same sentence, I frankly can't believe it...

Brauny Fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Have you got Cardiff and Swansea mixed up? No, he hasn't.
Leeds Fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Newcastle came down with a Prem squad, and went straight back up.
ARM1968 Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 2nd place team usually does better - haven't checked the stats but my aged father swears it's true.
StanSP Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Have you got Cardiff and Swansea mixed up? Nope. Swansea went up via play-offs the year QPR got promoted.
GLC Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Nope. Swansea went up via play-offs the year QPR got promoted. Ah, Cardiff went up last year though, not in 2012
TJB-fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Im convinced that because we play good attacking passing football we'll be ok. Teams like swansea and Southampton have gone up doing so and have been fine
CPW22 Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Im convinced that because we play good attacking passing football we'll be ok. Teams like swansea and Southampton have gone up doing so and have been fine Agree, what position we finish in should be irrelevant, it's about the quality of football we play. Every team that has come down or is coming down from that list all sacked the manager that took them up.
MattFox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I think it's more to do with the quality of those sides than the league position. Some of those sides (reading,Cardiff) were never good enough for the top flight, the other two (wolves, qpr) imploded and made poor decisions. Newcastle had a top flight squad in the championship
Matt Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I was going to start a thread/ask a similar question, in recent years how many teams that go up as Champions stay in the Premiership the following season/for a few seasons. I am led to believe they have more chance than the 2nd placed teams and certainly the playoff winning team. Anyone know the success rate of survival?
Soar Fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Ah, Cardiff went up last year though, not in 2012 They went up in the 2012/13 season.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 These statistics mean Jack sh-t, in reality.
southfox66 Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I'd say compare us to Southampton when they went up, I think we'll be ok for a few years yet.
cjslcfc Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Whether we finish first or second it will have absolutely no bearing on our chances of staying up next season. What will have a bearing is our transfer policy, whether the owners have patience if things aren't going well and how our younger players develop and adapt to the league.
Callabinho Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 What a lot of teams do wrong after promotion is rob the championship of their supposed "best players". Nige and his team won't fall into that trap I'm sure of it, we will follow in the foot steps of Southampton, the idea of building on what you have got and adding extra quality where needed. We won't go mad signing player after player as we have the basis of a very good side already.
Snooty Fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Agreed, going up first or second will have no bearing on next season. Mods please close the thread.
