Do you mean it is no longer Windoows XP ? Or has the appearance just changed? If the appearance has changed I think you can change it back by right clicking somewhere on your desktop and then selecting properties. Then on the themes tab I think you can change it back to the new style. I keep mine on the old style because someone told me it makes your pc work faster but I don't know if that's true or not!

If your XP OS has gone though I've no idea what happened and think you would have to format and re-install XP. Don't do that though until you know for sure cos you will lose everything on the pc!

Its weird mate when i turn it on it looks like windows 98 but then i restart it it goes back to xp. Then i go on it the next day its windows 98 :S ive tried changing the appearcne and the theme and it doesnt work neither does a system restore, its just really annoying

the other day i was watching a movie on my laptop but through my tv using a HDMI cable, all of a sudden it just faded to black.

nothing wrong with the movie player and the tv is fine, but now my tv no longer recognises my laptop.

any thoughts on what might have happened?

Are you turning it off properly or just cutting the power to it? That sounds like the machine was not turned off properly and so it boots it into safe mode.

Ive been turning it off properly mate, but when it comes up with the 98 toolbar i just turn it off. Sometimes it will freeze on the welcome screen as well so i just turn it off and back on then its the xp taskbar again

What do you mean you can't? That it's too slow?

Viruses?

I just couldn't get any web pages to open. Anyhoo it seems to be ok now I think it must have been my ISP.

A few things you could try:

Re-install the drivers for your wireless card - Start > Control Panel > Device Manage > Network Adaptors > Right click on the driver and update software. If that doesn't kick off the re-install, just go to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers from there.

Secondly, you could try and do the usual anti-virus / spyware stuff. So use your anti virus software to run a scan and then something like Spybot Search and Destroy. Also worth running CCleaner just to give the internet files a clear out.

If that doesn't cure the issue then it might be the actual wireless card itself. Is it an external card or something built into the laptop? Not sure why it would stall the system though. Hope the first two suggestions work - another thing to try is if you have another wireless dongle then give that a go and see if you have the same issues.

Having updated the driver it seems a lot better now - thanks.

What OS are you on?

If it's Windows 7...

Right click the desktop > Personalize.. then there's a desktop background icon click that and it let's you change it, OR just right click the image you want as your background and click 'set as desktop background'.

It's Windows XP. I've tried right clicking on a picture, selected 'set as desktop background' but nothing happens. <_<

Weirdly, when i switch user (to my missus desktop) and go to control panel/display, the desktop background tab is there and i have no problem changing it on hers.

Is your account an administrator?

Erm, not sure, i didn't set it up when we first got it.

How do i check?

It's in Control panel>User Accounts, but i'm not sure what you do after you are there.

Cheers. Apparently we were both 'administrators'.

Not any more, she's been demoted to 'limited'.

I am having problems watching videos online. Youtube, Google Video, TheWeatherNetwork, anywhere.

The sound plays fine but the video keeps stopping every 2 seconds and then 2 seconds later jumping to catch up with the sound.

I have uninstalled Flash Player properly and then installed it again and the videos start playing fine again. Then a few hours later it goes back to the same problem.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

Low bandwidth or poor internet connection. Leave the video for a few minutes to buffer :)

Cheers DB11. I've done a bandwidth test and this is what I got. Is there any way to make it better?

Is the buffer thing the red line that moves across the video? I've never had this problem before, just in the last week, so don't understand why it's just started happening.

Any P2P things running in background?

Not for a couple of weeks. I have uTorrent and use that sometimes but I don't think I've used it for at least 10 days. (if that's what p2p is, not sure!). I haven't played a game on Steam for a week or so either.

It's getting on my nerves now cos I watch a few videos every day and now I can't online. I can watch clips I have saved on my pc but not on a website. If I re-install Flash Player it works again for a little while but then ducks up again. It's like Flash keeps getting corrupted.
