'windows cannot access the specified device, path or file you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item'

Just keep getting this whenever I try and do anything :ermm:

Not even sure how I got on the internet tbh.

Nobody know anything about this?

Everytime I try and open something now it just asks me what program I want to open it with.

EDIT - Pretty sure i've fixed it now. :fc:

I had this "zlob" thing or whatever it is and ended up having to buy a new laptop. Hideous thing - I hope whoever created it gets hit by a bus next time they're out the house (assuming the sad git knows where his front door is!)

That shouldnt have been necessary?!

It was a 5 year old laptop and close to death anyway so it was just the excuse I needed but I just couldnt shift that virus at all. I was giving 4 programmes to clear it which I had to download off of another computer and then try and run in safe mode but they looked to have cleared things out until I went back onto the main bit and it all went nuts again. The main issue is that these anti malware bits and bobs seem to need the internet to run fully and the virus stopped me having any access to online stuff apart from the websites it wanted me to see (so basically adverts!!).

Yeh, what I meant was that if all else fails you could have formatted the hard drive!

you wanna sell it?

I am looking for an old lappy to run my car diagnostic software

The only reason I still had it was because of the all the files I had saved on there. The machine itself was piss poor in that you turned it on and went off to make a cup of tea / 2 hour nap before it had decided that it was ready to play ball. It was just a case of me being reluctant to get a new machine while there was still life in the old one. When it all officially went tits up it was time to let the old girl rest in peace.

Sorry pal - this was all a month or so ago so it's already gone.

Anybody know about a folder called "SecTaskMan" and if I should delete it or not? It's in C Drive / Documents and Settings / All Users / Application Data.

I've never noticed it before and have read things that say it could be bad and others that say it's normal.

How did you go on with moving all the files between computers?

I'm desperate not to get another one because it's got so much on it. No idea what i'd do without it, but it looks fooked. And getting a new one would be so much hassle that I just can't be arsed with. <_< But i've had it well over 6 years now.

Yeh time for an upgrade anyway really after 5-6 years. Wouldnt be too much hassle transferring files across.

Yes but it's not enough ram for the operating system, let alone any programs on top of it.

Laptops are dirt cheap now, can get one for processing and internet etc for like 300 quid (even less if ya have smaller screen)

Any recommendations for the best anti-virus software? I've always used Nod32 but the licence has just run out and, irritatingly, I can't get a freebie renewal anymore.

I'd be more than happy to pay up and stick with Nod32 - it's never let me down. Best option? :dunno: I can probably get AVG added to my home lappy through work (free, minimal hassle) but I'm not a big fan - despite its rave reviews. We use it on all the machines at work, but are still constantly getting viruses. :ermm:

Any other suggestions....?

Oh, and also my Mum wants new anti-virus software on her home PC but only has dial up  (silly woman!!) so it's pretty much impossible to download software. This is probably a daft question, but would it be better for me to get a 2-user licence? If so, can I get an actual disc to install it from - I've only ever upgraded by downloading the software, I think?

Avast Free Antivirus 5.0.507

get it here

Avast Free 5, an A-list freeware antivirus app, provides the same steadfast protection of well-known, pricier antivirus programs. Avast is remarkable for both its effectiveness and arguably providing the most complete free antivirus on the market.

Avast Free 5, formerly known as the Home Edition, protects you with multiple guards. The antivirus, antispyware, and heuristics engines form a security core that also includes multiple real-time shields. The adjustable mail and file system shields join the pre-existing behavior, network, instant messaging, peer-to-peer, and Web shields. The behavioral shield is a common-sense feature, as security software publishers leverage their large user bases to detect threats early and warn others. Other new features include a silent-gaming mode and an "intelligent scanner" that only looks at changed files after establishing a baseline. The biggest change in Avast 5, though, is the interface. Gone is the music player default look, which was skinnable but confusing. In its place is a sleek UI that new users should find far more manageable. It's also Aero-friendly, with Explorer-style navigation buttons in case you can't remember where you tweaked a particular setting.

Avast's recent independent third-party testing has been notably solid, able to hold its own against better-known programs from Symantec and Microsoft. Avast 5 Free lacks features in the paid upgrade including antispam measures, a testing sandbox, a Script shield, and a firewall. Even without those, Avast Free 5 is probably the strongest, free antivirus currently available.

From ALWIL Software :

Avast Free Antivirus is based on multiple protective layers that work together to provide security. The product is designed for the average consumer who wants easy-to-use protection for basic email and web surfing. It is limited to home and non-commercial users. New features match top detection with increased efficiency. Computer memory requirements for the new antivirus and antispyware engine have been cut in half. Scanning is 40 percent faster, saving both time and computer resources. Complete rootkit protection includes real-time detection to ward off initial installation, on-demand scanning and boot-time scans.

The user friendly 5.0 has a new interface with easy-to-adjust settings, a context-sensitive help menu and graphs showing ongoing protection activities. Users can set the time and conditions for complete scans, with avast even waking up their computer from hibernation for midnight scans before putting it back to bed. Multiple shields prevent the spread of malware via email by checking incoming and outgoing emails for suspect content, identify malware by its anticipated behavior or by looking out for unusual activity and attempts at system modifications.
