This decent for a laptop for uni?

http://www.laptopoutlet.co.uk/59399422-lenovo-u410-14-inch-core-i7-ultrabook-touchscreen-intel-3537u-8gb-ram-500gb-hdd.html

Budget of about £600.

Needs to do your usual stuff as well as play some games, nothing too strenuous but obviously I want it to cope pretty well with anything.

Lenovo seem to be quite good value for money right now. But I haven't shopped for laptops for years so I don't really know what's what right now.

I need a bit of advice for connecting my laptop (it's a Compaq Presario CQ56) to my TV, so that I can watch television programmes or DVDs on a big screen. The laptop doesn’t have an HDMI port, but there is a VGA port on both the laptop and the TV, so video is no problem. I’ve read that to hear the audio through the TV I need a 3.5 mm-to-RCA audio adapter, which should plug into the headphone jack on the laptop, and then connect the adaptor using a pair of RCA cables.

I have a cable which has two RCA connectors (one red, one white) at one end, and a single jack which plugs into the laptop headphone socket at the other. However, when I connect the TV to the RCA/audio jacks on the TV, and the headphone socket on the laptop, I’m still getting no sound. Does anyone know if I need the 3.5 mm-to-RCA audio adapter?

The tv should have an audio in near the vga socket, the av(red/white) will be for a/v or component in.

Thanks. Yes, it does, and that is where I plugged in the red and white jacks on the cable. The other end of the cable is a jack that I put in the laptop's headphone socket, but like I said the audio didn't work. I've read that I need to use an adaptor, but I was hoping the cable would mean it wasn't needed. Any thoughts?

No you've got it wrong, you don't use the red/white if using the vga, the audio in should be a 3.5mm socket same as the laptop, it might not be near the vga socket.

You can get a VGA to HDMI converter. Not sure if that would help.

Hi Red5. Thanks again for your help. I was following the instructions in this article, which seems pretty clear: http://smallbusiness.chron.com/hook-up-compaq-presario-tv-26501.html. I don't have a 3.5 mm-to-RCA adapter but I do have a cable with red/white jacks on one end and a 3.5mm jack on the other (which fits the headphone socket of the laptop). I've looked on the TV and there is a headphone socket but the only audio-in is a pair of red/white sockets - into which the cable jacks fit. My question is whether I would be better off buying a separate RCA cable and 3.5 mm-to-RCA adapter.

Alternatively, would a VGA/HDMI converter be a better idea?

I think your cable is ok and you don't need the adapter, if the tv doesn't have an audio in from pc then what you're doing is correct, but as it's not working something isn't right, have you checked the output from the laptop with some headphones, try while the vga is connected to the tv.

A vga/hdmi is ok but expensive, and cheap ones are no good, and you still need the audio out from the laptop to work.

Thanks again, Red5. I'll have another go at it and let you know what happens.

I've messed up bad, I thought I was downloading xbmc to get a load of TV progs but I've downloaded 2 things called optimizer pro and installconverter. I've tried to use add and remove programs but the list shown only shows programs beginning with M. I had to reinstall cc cleaner and uninstall with that but that shows the same list. I've tried system restore but that does nothing. I've shredded the programs with AVG, whatever that means, but they're still there.

Most of my programs aren't showing on my programs list either.

I connected the laptop to a pair of speakers and they worked fine, so I think it must be the cable. I'll buy a new one and give that a go.

Thanks for your help.

I tried malware bytes.

I reverted to factory setting this morning. I need a safe site to download a driver for my Lexmark 1200 printer, the official site doesn't do it anymore, any ideas?

Do you have any model or serial numbers? Just type them into the Lexmark Support Drivers & Downloads page and it'll be there. They don't just take drivers off of the website they will at least archive them and have them somewhere

I've tried the official site and it says not found. I've found this site but I'm not sure if it's kosher.

Definitely don't download anything from there.

I've found the driver on the official site now, thanks for your help.

Yep it's got a pc audio in above the vga socket, you just need a normal 3.5mm audio cable.

You are just too clever for your own good! Fvck knows how I missed that (easy, I know - the fact that it is marked "audio" completely fooled me) but thanks so much for pointing it out. Brilliant!

Thanks a lot.
