MPH Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 Native Americans who used to go into battle would paint their faces red. This is where the term redskins came from. As this was localized to just certain tribes, it wasn't universally understood. Now other tribes and do gooders have twisted the term redskin to be a direct reference to the colour of native American skin. But that was never the case, originally. It's just another case of political correctness gone mad, for me. My source? A Cherokee native American living in the Cherokee reservation here in North Carolina.
Webbo Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 If they think that logo is offensive they should have seen it when they were originally called the Washington Foreskins.

The etymology of lots of slurs seem pretty harmless. Doesn't stop them being slurs, though.
