Making the step up....

Set-pieces is what i'll be worried about. Kasper doesn't command his box enough for me and we struggled against teams with height.

Andy Carroll will have a field day.

Andy Carroll has never had a field day.

Then I'd be even more worried if we are starting a 35 year old every week.

You know, I think he WILL start him.. I'm expecting a Morgan/Upson centre back pairing in the first game?

I'm surprised at people's attitude re. Schlupp. I reckon he's going to surprise people, IF he's used. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone else start at left back.

The players I'm most worried about are De Laet & Morgan, I've grown to like De Laet, but when given the chance to play in the Prem before he didn't look that great for Norwich especially. He's got stability with us now though, & I have to say he has improved, but of past times at other clubs, there's a bit of doubt in my mind about his defensive skills at Prem level.

I have seen other fans worrying about Morgan somewhat, I think he can perform well, if he has younger legs & that bit of pace alongside him. But as Babs said any sign of weakness or a slip up, could prove costly in matches, Morgan a few times last season, made some bad errors, something he wasn't doing in the 2012/13 season.

Drinkwater & James need that experience alongside them, leave them two on their own in games, where we will probably get dominated possession wise, & we are chasing the game could turn out to be disastrous. Take our first game against Everton for instance, if Barkley remains an Everton player, he will more than likely be the player who get's forward from the Everton midfield, we wouldn't have anybody to track him, as Drinkwater & James will have to concentrate on marking the likes of McCarthy, Osman & maybe Barry, which will leave a gap behind the midfield, don't get in a new midfielder that could prove to be a huge problem especially against the top sides.

Other than that I'm confident.

Hence why we signed Upson

Upson is their for Premier League experience, hopefully he doesn't start the majority of games. I can see Pearson rotating him & Wasilewski on the bench, with Moore being the main benched defender.

We need someone like Virgil Van Dijk, he would give Carroll a run for his money.

Signing defenders from Scotland?, think I've seen enough of that for a lifetime.

Probably because he's been found wanting when put under pressure defensively, massive potential though. If he solely focuses on being a left back and puts in the work preseason to learn the position more who knows.

Against the top sides we'll probably go with a 5.

With you mentioning Barkley, I thought we struggled to get to grips with players he "played between the lines" last year, we are going to come up against this more next season against top and bottom teams so we'll definitely have to learn to cope with that.

5 at the back or in midfield?

Yep I can remember against QPR especially, even though we won the game, the amount of times Kranjcar got into that space & caused us problems was pretty endless. You will have many players making those runs from midfield, you will have many teams playing four or five in midfield, three more central & one or two pushing on, and if we continue to play James & Drinkwater on their own, despite how good they were in the Championship, at Prem level, they will more than likely struggle to cope. In our first month, we will see many players, who will either make endless runs from midfield, or play in "hole" as they call it, Barkley against Everton, Fabregas against Chelsea, Ozil & Ramsey against Arsenal. The only way of combating that is if we play three central midfielders.

de Laet worries me the most. I think he's overrated. Yes he's lightning quick and a superb dribbler but no/little end product - his crossing on the run is absolutely terrible. You can't afford to waste those opportunities to deliver a quality cross at prem level. His defending is mostly good but he is prone to the most witless of errors conceding quite needless goals in the process - I remember one home match (was it Wigan) where he got caught dawdling on a ball which seemed to be running out of play for a goal kick, dispossessed, goal conceded. Against Millwall the previous season - he hesitated under a high ball and cost us a goal. These are of course few lapses but at Prem level they can lose you points/momentum/confidence. Don't get me wrong I love the guy's spirit, his bravery and his general never-say-die attitude but next season that may not be enough.

I'm not sure we don't have a defender who doesn't make those kind of errors.

We need a left back, for me, I find the suggestion Schlupp is anywhere near the required standard laughable tbh. I think if we signed a capable goal scorer and top level center back on top of that we'd finish 15th at the lowest and be fairly comfortable. Go with what we've got and we could stay up but can see it being a slog of a season.

The examples I quote are cases where a situation with no danger in them suddenly lead to us conceding - that isn't true of say Wes, or Liam, or even Wasy - they might make mistakes but they hardly ever make a catastrophic error which gifts the opposition a goal. Our defence must have had something going for it last season!

I can think of plenty of occasions that Moore and Konch have ****ed up needlessly.

And a few where Morgan has to.

I kinda laff at the criticism of Schlupp making defensive errors. I agree with you, Konchesky always springs to my mind as the player opposition teams will look to exploit. He's made as many as Schlupp surely?

Their both not good enough.

I think even worldwide the quality of fullbacks isn't great. So it's not a problem specific to us, how many Premier league clubs would you say had a good LB and RB?
