ousefox Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 Even in the PFA team of the year where you get the choice of up to 4 midfielders each time look how many times Gerrard appears in comparison to Scholes. In fact ' Steven Gerrard currently holds the most appearances in the PFA Team of the Year in the Premier League era with eight appearances'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PFA_Team_of_the_Year_(2000s) I swear people only started to rave about Scholes towards the end of his career. Maybe because in the past he hadn't stuck out as much as he had been in such a good team or maybe it was because he was able to sustain his level of quality for so long. Gerrard has probably been the Premier League's finest and most consistent player.

Hugo Sanchez Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 Patrick Veria and Roy Keane are the two best midfielders in premiership history. Gerrard has had his chance at winning titles and has failed. He's was a world class midfielder, not denying that but only for about 4 years. This debate will never end but if I was picking two of the best premiership midfielders it be Veria and Keane everyday.
Grandad. Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 Yeah but that has nothing to do with what anyone is on about Hugo, with no disrespect. We're on about Gerrard and Scholes. Like Watson has said, nobody raved about Scholes until he retired for the first time, or maybe a little time before that actually. I personally believe the Scholes craze came up when Barcelona brought their tika-taka style to the European stage, and the likes of Iniesta and Xavi told everyone how good Scholes was and he could play in that Barcelona side, granted he could! Before that? Nobody really batted an eye lid about Paul Scholes's style of play. Where was the hysteria when he retired himself from the national side? There wasn't, because the mass thought we were no worse off without Paul Scholes. Would we have done any better at any major tournament after Euro 2004 with Paul Scholes in the side? I doubt it. For someone who was apparently that good for his club side who won everything, how come none of the players who were winning them trophies with Paul Scholes never once voted for him as the Man United player of the year, never won supporters player of the year, never won PFA player of the year and only managed to make the team of the year twice? Don't get me wrong, Scholes is one of the best ever to grace the Premier League, but it seems to be a bit of a bandwagon formed because a couple of pros have told you Scholes was one of the best. I don't seem to remember from 2000-2004 where Paul Scholes was probably at his best there being some national bandwagon about him and his qualities.
benpicko Posted 30 July 2014 Posted 30 July 2014 Wonder who the next scapegoat's going to be. We had Gerrard and Rooney, now we only have Rooney to blame when we lose
The Horse's Mouth Posted 30 July 2014 Posted 30 July 2014 God I can't believe you're doing this argument again
Darkon84 Posted 30 July 2014 Posted 30 July 2014 God I can't believe you're doing this argument again Let's be honest, we all saw it coming a mile off. Gerrard v Scholes argument, and petty insults thrown around by the usuals. Still entertaining though.
Jimothy Posted 30 July 2014 Posted 30 July 2014 I can't believe it either. At the end of the day it's very hard to actually say definitively whether one top player is better than another. If someone comes along and starts mouthing off that Trevor Benjamin was better than Alan Shearer, it's not too hard to pull that argument apart, but for players like Scholes and Gerrard it's nigh on impossible. You can't really look at medals won, because as others have said players may choose to stay at a club they love rather than take a chance to move somewhere and win more. The aforementioned Shearer could have joined Man Utd, chose his boyhood team instead and won sod all. Doesn't make him a worse striker than Andy Cole does it. You can't use PFA teams either, as that's just silly. For me, out of the two Gerrard is better. He has every attribute needed for a world class player. Scholes had limitations, like the fact he was shit at tackling and he wasn't very quick. But I'm sure someone could come along and point out he had a better football brain and excellent movement off the ball. It's all subjective and just ends up being a continuous argument with no conclusion.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 30 July 2014 Posted 30 July 2014 I see Gerrard is still indulging in a self pity party. Odious gimp.
