Grandad. Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 If I was a United fan I would have to disagree in that over the past 24 years it's more likely to have been a disaster to be a Liverpool fan. Having to put up with shite like the spice boys haha. However seeing as I'm a Leicester City fan and post regularly on a Leicester City forum funnily enough about Leicester City, I would say on the whole it doesn't bother me. Except when I see a Scouse fan boy go on and on about how good the mediocrity has been. Also along with Lampard, Scholes is a much better player than Gerrard. I know you can't stand that one either. It doesn't bother you? You've bored the crap out of people in this thread with 8 posts? It doesn't bother you? Well, you keep proving to yourself and the rest of the forum that it doesn't bother you and enlighten us with some more garbage about the topic of this thread, because you have been right on the button so far.

I know I've been right on the button in regards to Steven Gerrard. Pleased that you've finally took those red shite specs off.
Bert Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Another thread of pointless arguments. I'm disappointed Gerrard has retired because he's one of my favourite all time England players. Hope Rooney gets the armband. Might bring the best out of him.
Guest Col city fan Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 I suggest that anyone who clamours for Rooney to become England captain has not learnt anything about the dire situation of our International side for the past God knows how many years. Why on earth do we want to continue to do the same ol things, tournament in, tournament out? Rooney, like Gerrard has been exceptional at club level, but neither have ever replicated their form at International Level. Rooney has had many chances to do so. The hopes of the nation have been pinned on his shoulders time and time again and he's never performed at anything above a generally ok level. We need a real change. We need to be daring, to plan for the future. To develop a side built on youth. Not one where younger players are somehow integrated into the 'Old Guard' but where the emphasis is on a youthful side. Let's find a good young captain too. Someone who will develop as he team develops. I don't know who, but I'm not involved with the set up. It's time to be radical. Giving the captaincy to Rooney sends out completely the opposite message to the one I'm portraying here. He gets frustrated, he is inconsistent when in an England shirt, and, if I'm honest, every time I hear him he sounds as if he couldn't motivate his way out of a paper bag. We can and should do better.
Manwell Pablo Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 What's he ever achieve really ? Nothing in a England shirt and one flukey Champions league. I wouldn't consider him a great of modern times. I think Frank Lampard will be better remembered because of what he's achieved in his career. Think he's won a bit more than that Mr Football.
Guest MattP Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 This. If in 50 years time someone mentioned the "Golden Generation", the other person in the conversation would say "you mean the ones that won the World Cup?" "No, stupid. The ones I remember who did absolutely nothing of note but were in OK magazine alot and had publicised affairs more often than the squad that came before them, and more tattoos than the ones that succeeded them. You know, whats-his-face and him with the feet. And the scruffy lad. Them were the days, all that glory." Beautifully put! We can almost completely rid of ourselves of this now, everything from the underachievement to the WAG culture that infested us to the celebrity culture that got mixed up in our football team to the detriment of out national game. You can blame Sven for half of that as well, is any football organisation he managed not still suffering from his tenure in some way, shape or form? It's just as big a job for the management of the side to remove that from the nations football mentality as it is to produce they into a talented team on the football pitch. Both will be vital to the future success of our generations.
Hugo Sanchez Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Think he's won a bit more than that Mr Football. F.a cup, league cup and a uefa cup ... snigger.
Captain... Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 I'm not getting drawn into an argument with the Arsenal fan in Hugo and the Man United fan in GingerFox about Steven Gerrard's career, You did well there... This. Based on recent tournaments in 50 years time we may look back on getting to the quarter final consistently as the glory years. As for Gerrard, a great player for Club and Country anyone saying otherwise is clueless. Better than Lampard? I'd say so, Gerrard was a great player in a good team and constantly took control of the game and won games almost singlehandedly for Liverpool and big games too, Lampard was playing for a much better side for the majority of his career and had better players around him so didn't need to do so much work on his own. Despite all his good performances Lampard doesn't have anything as career defining as Gerrard against West Ham and Gerrard against Milan. Better than Scholes? Scholes on his day was the best in the world, but Gerrard has had a better career. For England Gerrard has been our best and most consistent performer for the last decade and deserves every accolade and plaudit he has won, and I know football fans have very short memories, but one poor tournament doesn't change that.
Guest MattP Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Based on recent tournaments in 50 years time we may look back on getting to the quarter final consistently as the glory years. We won't considering ten years earlier we got to a couple of semi finals.
Captain... Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 We won't considering ten years earlier we got to a couple of semi finals. That wasn't really the point, the point was we are seemingly on the way down and consistently qualifying for tournaments and reaching the quarter finals will become a highlight for younger England fans, and in 50 years time while we are struggling to beat Qatar they will look back fondly on this "golden" era of English football.

Then it's very important people of our age educate them.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 His top 3 performances according to the Sun was at Wembley v Poland (2013), away at Andorra (2007) and the 1-0 against Germany (2000).
Danno Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Can't wait to see Gerrard's 156 best sideways passes on Dave with expert analysis by Jason Manford soon.
Jimothy Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Can't wait to see Gerrard's 156 best sideways passes on Dave with expert analysis by Jason Manford soon. When probably the only criticism of Gerrard's style of play is that he tries to play the "Hollywood ball" too much, that joke doesn't really work.

Samilktray Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 Can't say I'm happy or sad about this. He was never really that good for us, occasionally being the best of a bad bunch. I'd of had Cole as captain if he hadnt of retired. Can't see any obvious candidates to replace Gerrard
The Horse's Mouth Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 he's the reason we didn't win the world cup, good riddance.
AyewJoking Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 Had to postpone the announcement a few days after Lahm did it properly.
Tielemans63 Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 He was a good servant to England IMHO - no more, no less. He'll be missed in the short term but long term I don't think he'll be remembered as one of England's greats despite all those caps.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 Decent player but vastly over-rated on account of being 'Englands rose', and a thug to boot.
Fox92 Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 What's he ever achieve really ? Nothing in a England shirt and one flukey Champions league. I wouldn't consider him a great of modern times. I think Frank Lampard will be better remembered because of what he's achieved in his career. He was loyal to the team he has supported all his life. If he would have said fvck you Liverpool, like he could have when nearly every top club in Europe wanted him, then he would have won more than he has now. But don't tell me the 2005 European Cup final was "fluckey" because it wasn't. I've always said what a player achieves doesn't define how good he is. Matt Le Tissier won fvck all because he was loyal to Southampton, yet he's one of the greatest players I have ever seen. Gerrard was a top player. There is no doubting that. At his best, he was unstoppable - pace, strength, leadership, good in the air, could tackle, ability to pass - which is why all the top clubs wanted him. He was complete. Sir Alex wanted him as a replacement for Keane ffs, regardless of what his new stupid book says. I don't think players can win at times. People say loyalty is gone, yet when a player is loyal and wins next to nothing then he's not a "top player". But I don't actually mean "next to nothing", Gerrard has League Cups, Europa Cup, FA Cups and a European Cup. He hasn't got a Premier League. Big wow. I bet he really struggles to sleep when he's got his Champions League medal at the side of him.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 29 July 2014 Posted 29 July 2014 Was never a Paul Scholes level player though, was he.
