We don't know they did hit the water at that speed

True.

None of the bodies have life vests on and the fact that they've come out of the plane suggests that it was pretty catastrophic though...

Minor incidents get noticed and reported more in the wake of a major accident. There has probably been mo more minor incidents than usual. Have flown all over Asia and never had a problem. Lao airlines was a bit scary but that was one of these 50-seat planes so was naturally a bit of a choppy ride.

Any incident involving a plane, no matter how minor will always make the headlines.

Infact I would go as far to say that the recent Asian Air crash has probably stole the headlines of the Virgin story. The British media would have been licking their lips over that landing gear issue. I mean it even makes the headlines when some passengers have to wait a few extra hours at the airport for fog, snow or a strike etc...

As for the plane overshooting the runway, that's quite rare and is guaranteed to make the news. Some people would probably ignore this story and are only noticing it due to all of the other plane news but that would have been guaranteed to make it on to the british news on its own, even without the fatal crash. Yes, obviously there's the extra hype to link it all together, but it would have still been reported.

Before this year air travel was by far and away the safest form of travel with fewest numbers of injuries per capita than any other form of travel. That includes driving, walking and sailing ( boats). Even walking is considerably more lethal.

Surely there's not been enough this year  for that to change?

It depends how you want to look at statistocs. This year has actually seen the lowest number of deadly commercial plane crashes on record. This year has also continued the trend of falling aviation incidents. However on lives lost then this year hasnt been a great one, nearly 5x as many as last year. It must be said, however, foul play has played a part in at least one of the accidents.

Anyone who questions the safety of flying is an idiot and that comes from a nervous flyer. Every part of an aircraft is engineered so precisely to such high standards. And ceartainly in the western world each part is also scrutinised quite heavily during regular maintenance checks. They're also flown by people that go through extensive training for all possible situations.

Having said that, as much as I tell myself all this, I still am a fairly nervous flyer tho I manage to calm down after about half an hour

As I've got older the more worried I get about flying. I will never let me my fear of flying stop me from going on a plane but I certainly worry and think about it a lot more.

Its a good job to be honest as next year I'm flying to Las Vegas, Cyprus and South Africa.

My comment was tongue in cheek. I absolutely love flying and have always wanted to be a pilot. the first thing I'll do if I come into money will be to get my PPL

Just had this conversation with my mother in law

MIL "I'm glad they found that plane that went missing"

ME "you do realise it crashed and they have found bodies don't you?"

MIL "yes I do"

I left it at that, I suppose she has a point.

I had a similar conversation with someone the other day.

THEM: "I can't believe that plane has gone missing."

ME: "Oh they've found it now mate"

THEM: "That's great news. Where was it?"

ME: "Crashed into the sea"

THEM: "Oh..."

Much much better that the relatives know what happened and have certainty than not know where or even if the plane went down like MH370.
