We need to play our strongest team and Hughes and Williams are our 2 best midfielders. Once Weso is back then I think we will be a different team. Although i've been wrong before and no doubt will be again.

Although i've been wrong before and no doubt will be again. I think Joey's been far more effective this season than Williams. Williams is a gifted player, but he's a bone idle so and so. If I had half his talent, I wouldn't be wasting it the way he does.

Joeys outshone all our midfield, If anyone i'd replace Sylla, he's been lazy and done fnuck all since the Celtic game. Let him sit on the bench or in the reserves until he pulls his finger out. Hughes on the right and on corners with Williams in the centre with Joey, lovely Jubbly.

Thracian Posted 30 August 2005 Posted 30 August 2005 I'd try to sneak him on as an extra. Play 12 men. We've tried playing with 11 and it's not enough. Perhaps we could explain this to the League. That is if we carry on with 11 men we could be going down. Twelve men gives us options. Levein can play a blanket defence and still keep a spare man up front. And if one guy (probably Sylla) is having an off day again it doesn't matter cos the spare man can fill in. Levein can play 11 men in defence to cover opposition dead ball kicks and we'll still have that sneaky one up front. If only we can wangle it = that's a cure for all Levein's headaches. Are there any referees who can't count?

I cannot understand how anybody would drop Gudjonsson the way he has been playing this season - imo he has been our one consistent player and carries our central midfield with the ghost that is Williams beside him. I was a massive critic of Joey last season but he has been immense, I hope Levein sees sense and doesn't drop Joey when Kisnorbo is match fit.

Hughes is supposed to be back and no-one seems to know what the hell to do with him. As if City were playing well. Who's done okay in the City shirt? I'll tell you: Stearman, Joey, Connolly, Elvis and Maybury. To a lesser extent there's Nils, MDV,Williams and, maybe, Dion. The rest, that's nine out of about 14, can look over their shoulders. How can City perform with nine plusses out of 14 or even nine out of 11 on matchday? Can't be done. Hughes should make it 10/11 with any luck. That should see us to halfway ... but it does emphasise...the squad ain't half thin.

It's not that we don't know what to do with him (as if City were playing well). Exactly because that's not quite the case, it is because there are so many possibilities to choose from!

The midfield would be so narrow as Levein would have Tiatto on the left and everything would just go down the middle, It would be like having Houllier as manager.
BenFilbert Posted 30 August 2005 Posted 30 August 2005 I don't think Joey is good enough but we need that sort of player. Kisnorbo i suppose. I think both Williams and Hughes are very good but i don't think we'll be able to play both. Maybe we could change the formation to 3 - 5 - 2 because we seem to be quite weak in midfield and that could mean that our defence might not have to be so far up the pitch. If Craig wants our defence up the pitch we need to have more pace at the back. We keep being caught out by balls over the top. Just look at how many times an opposition player has tried to go round Douglas. Sheffield U (penalty incident). Stoke. Ipswich. Luton (penalty incident). That's 4 at least. We don't have a good ball winner in midfield so we might have to put another player in there. Not the way we would like to do it but we might have to. That would mean that we could play both Williams and Hughes. Joey might cope better and with Tiatto being poor so far this season we could play Wilcox and he could just stick to the left. Sylla started well but has been poor recently. Hamill or Hammond on the right. We need to sort out our pathetic defending from corners/free kicks/crosses. Zonal doesn't work at all. We need to change our corner taker. Hughes maybe? Williams' floaters are not good enough. I could get a pie in the time it takes for the ball to reach the box. After all that, i am still very positive for the season ahead. We've still got 40 games left! 40! No need to panic just yet.

Joey has been superb this season, but he doesn't offer us anything going forward which we desperately need. We have got to kill teams off instead of being on the back foot. Whenever i've seen Hughes an Williams in the centre (which is very rare) they have both played well and the team has look dangerous. I think people automatically assume every team needs a defensive midfielder, but not necessarily. Williams has worked alot on his defensive side of his game and is getting stuck in more, Hughes is also very tenacious and both of them could take it in turns for playing the sitting midfielder whilst the other looks to break forward. It can't be any worse than what's happening at the minute, Williams needs some shooting practise.

The Scottish midfielder has been forced to watch the action from the sidelines after picking up an ankle knock in pre-season. But assistant manager Rob Kelly has confirmed that Hughes is now well down the road to recovery, and hopes he will be available for selection when the Foxes take on Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, September 10. He said: "Stephen is progressing. He joined in some light sessions this morning and it is good to have him back around the place. But he hasn't done any contact work yet. "The physio has worked really hard with him and has done well. We are hopeful that he might be available for selection after the international break." Meanwhile, Kelly had further good news concerning the fitness of Danny Tiatto and Patrik Gerrbrand. He added: "We think that Danny will be alright. He's had a tight hamstring which is something he's had before. We were conscious that we had to play two games in three days which would have been a big ask for him.
