Ryan's express earns a point

Ryan Beswick today took over where Alan Shush! left off with a "Six Five Special" free kick which earned Leicester City Reserves a 2-2 draw in their "away Pontins League match at Hinckley this afternoon.

Beswick, a natural left winger, curled his shot fiercely and perfectly around the Coventry wall and into the furthest corner of the net on 78 minutes and twice in the closing stages almost conjured a winner for City.

City fielded a strongish side which included several experienced first teamers and it was one of them, centre-forward Matty Fryatt who tapped in City's first half opener after Kishishev's corner.

It was just reward. Campbell had already had one shot saved by the diving Daniel Ireland. Kishishev saw another effort blocked and further low crosses by Beswick just failed to find a final touch.

Fryatt then squandered a seemingly unmissable chance from five yards before Coventry drew level when a shot by Kevin Thornton was only parrid by Paul henderson leaving Coventry striker Chris Birchall a simple tap in.

Leicester had Jamie Clapham making his debut in a City shirt and he was beaten by exacctly the same sort of ball as caught Mattock out at Blackpool only this time our opponents failed to capitalise. Clapham recovered to have a tidy game.

Just how referees can affect games unduly was emphasised next when Gabor Bori was clearly tripped a yard or so inside the box only for the referee to wave play on and for the ball to move swiftly to the other end where Henderson made the save of the game as a Coventry forward was presented with an apparent sitter from five yards.

However, Thornton was again the architect as Coventry raced through the inside right chanel and the cross inside left Wayne Andrews with an easy finish to put Coventry 2-1 ahead some 20 minutes from time.

Beswick fabulous free kick from a central position just outside the box saved City's blushes and City forged two decent chances to pinch a winner.

First Beswick won possession from a sleeping defender and backheeled a clever pass to Fryatt who delayed his effort from close range instead of shooting first time and the opportunity was lost.

Next a brilliant move between Beswick and Wesolowski left Kishishev just failing to connect with a diving header which might well have ended in the net.

The day marked a first appearance for centre-back Harry Worley who had a mixed day but showed himself quite dominant in the air in both defence and attack but a little bit lacking in urgency and football craft.

As for Man of the Match, there were worthy enough contenders in Kishishev and Wesolowski who mostly controlled central midfield in treacherous conditions on a stormy day but for me left-winger Ryan Beswick was Leicester's best.

He not only scored a memorable goal but was forever asking difficult questions for the Coventry defence with his varied but always quick passes into the box.

Always a positive and unfussy footballer Beswick also showed himself capable of a full 90 minutes after a season plagued by injury and, although he managed to move about the pitch on occasions, he and Bori continually created the width which stretched the Coventry defence and in so doing created gaps.

Thrac please never stop being positive about any of the Academy lads but in the same breath, please temper the hyperbole. Pleased to hear Beswick is getting fitter as it would be good for him to go to the US. :D;)

Cheers.

Bori gets a couple of positive mentions in that he should have won us a penalty kick and along with Beswick he provided width. Anything more to say on him? Holloway has suiggested communication is a problem but assuming he overcomes that soon did he look ready to be unleashed on the first team again?

I think in the absence of a more recognised understudy to Laczko, Beswick really ought to in contention for a place on the bench at least. Anyone got any more info on this Worley character?

Bori's looked the best of the two Hungarians so far and gave another solid performance today. If he's got communication problems I didn't notice them on the field. He looked completely at home. Once or twice he slipped a marker with sublime skill but the main thing was he did the simple things quickly, accurately and maintained the flow of the side.

I daren't praise him any more as people will start thinking he's a Youth player! :D

I see Thracian has already lined up the next Acadamy player (Beswick) to replace the obsession with the out-going Shush! Good report tho Thrac!

I've long thought Beswick is a quality player and have mentioned him lots of times over the last two years. He's been out through injury for much of this season but to me he always try to make things happen.

His big strength is not dribbling past people but delivering first time low and high crosses accurately. He creates goals for fun and in the simplest ways. He's a good marksman too and never seems to panic when he's finishing. Just does what's required with the minimum of preamble.

There isn't much to be enthusiastic about at Leicester.

Thought so.

Good enough to be snapped up Thracian?

Could prove to be good cover.

People have been known to criticise me for judging too early.

But he's only 19, he's 6ft 3ins and he does have a fairly commanding presence and looks as if he could be dangerous from set pieces too.

I'm a bit surprised some of his faults haven't been ironed out at this stage.

The occasion I mentioned when he just walked back, pointing at something, while a potential goal situation was being dealt with by his team-mates had to be believed and Gerry Taggart might have sent the guy home for that already.

But if he's still around I'd say he was worth an extended trial at least.

Thanks for that Thrac!

Good performance overall then?

We were a bit patchy and I expected us to create a bit more considering the first team players we had out. We didn't flow as much as against Stoke but Coventry were quite strong too and caused their own problems at times.

Cox continues to do well. What position did he play ? Sometimes players impress but he always seems to get a mention. Bori has impressed again with a solid performance. I was really surprised on Saturday that he didn't play. He can switch wings and seems to be very aware. The interplay with Oakley could develop given time. Ollie has the problem who to play Hume or Bori but that position doesn't suit Hume.

Is Clapham another Clarke i.e. solid and dependable ?

I know I'm a voice in the minority but Fryatt should be given a run if we find we are not going towards the play offs. Perhaps putting him in the shop window today.

I like Weso. His chance will come not too sure about Fryatt.

Neither would Sappleton.

He would have juggled it 76 times before backheeling it in with power.

The only thing Sappleshite juggles, is food. Straight into his mouth.

What happened to Sappleton ? Was scoring the in the reserves and then even made his debut for the first team but now it seems the lad has been pushed back and dropped into the youth team. Anyone honestly rate the guy ? (A real anwser would be nice i.e not the Sappleton fan club)

Cox played at right back.

I didn't see much of Clarke but Clapham might well be from the same mould.

He looked comfortable on the ball, got his head up, passed the ball rather than hoofed it out of defence, took up sensible positions but still got caught out exactly like Mattock and he made another mistake that might have been costly when he underhit a pass to Weso and the guy got dispossessed 20-yards outside the box with the back line exposed.

It was early in his first match though and what I did like was that he immediately signalled an apology to Weso and took the blame instead of doing what I've seen some now departed players do and try to blame someone else.

Clapham was also well involved, talked to people, offered support, lots of things I like in a full-back. I just didn't get the impression he'll offer much going forward but we no longer seem to mind about that.

Better right now than Mattock? Impossible to tell in the less fearsome atmosphere of a reserves match.

I know he scored but Fryatt has scored regularly in the reserves this season and I've seen him look much sharper and more dominant than he did today.

Weso was fine though after a stuttering start. He captained the side and did a full stint on a tricky, probably heavy pitch although I have to say it stood up well and looked a lot better than ours.

There was no andy King, either in the side or on the bench so I wonder if he's the next facing a stint on loan.
