Garry Monk hits out at Paulo Sousa!

Swansea captain Garry Monk has hit out at the training methods used by former manager Paulo Sousa.

Monk claimed some of them had little reason behind them, players were not worked hard enough and they were not allowed to do extra sessions.

But the 31-year-old defender says all that has now changed under new manager Brendan Rodgers.

"It can be a little difficult to take as a player mentally," Monk told the BBC's Sport Wales programme.

"The methods in training, there was no real reasoning behind any of his methods and why we were doing things. There was no great organisation towards it.

"Knowledge-wise he knew his stuff. But it was hard to take when you've gone from one extreme [under Sousa's predecessor Roberto Martinez] to the other extreme but it like we're back on track now.

"Training has stepped up and especially the way we play football, our football fitness is massive to us and I think you could see a lot of times last season we would dominate teams, get to the second half and we would be a bit tired and that mainly comes down from training."

Monk praised the work of Sousa in making Swansea's defence one of the tightest in the Championship last season, keeping 24 clean sheets.

But he admitted the two-times Champions League winner's style was not best suited to the way the Swans play.

"It was frustrating in terms of training going from working intensely hard every single day to practically not even getting a sweat on," added Monk, who had an on-the-pitch bust-up with Sousa after their draw with Crystal Palace last season for shaking hands with the referee who Sousa claimed had not shown the Swans respect.

"Every manager is different, everyone's philosophy is different. Paulo was a lot more laid back than other managers and you take each one as they come.

"As a group of players that I know and have trained with, every single day I know that's not what was best for us.

"Everyone agreed that we need to be pushed and pushed. In training we need to be going over the edge sometimes to get your fitness where you need it in the last five minutes, where we are being pushed to the limit in the game.

"That's kind of where we let ourselves down but it was difficult as well because we weren't allowed to do extra training.

"Every manager is different and you learn from every manager and defensively we learnt a lot from Paulo.

"We thank him for that, wish him all the best at Leicester but I think it was right for him to move on and now we've got a manager in who's going to work us."

----------------

Now this is from a player who had a public falling out with him i may add... Is it sour grapes? does it hold truth? well i guess we shall see in the coming months ahead! From all the interviews i have heard from the Leicester players tho they are really enjoying the change, but saying that they ain't exactly gonna come out so soon and say this is rubbish are they? unless we have a bunch of Michael Chopra's! which we dont :)

Swansea fan in peace here. I honestly believe Mr Sousa spelt trouble for the Swans. He upset a few players in the last few months and he didnt even speak to our chairman towards the end of the season. 12 months ago we fought tooth and nail to keep Martinez. We let Sousa go happily without a whiff of asking for any compo despite the fact he was still contracted to us. What does that tell you. I got no ill feeling towards you Leicester guys and I hope for the genuine fans sake that you have a good season but my gut feeling is that you will be calling for his head by early next year if not before. When he came to Swans he promised everything - but delivered a very boring brand of football. Yes, we finished 7th but Christ was it boooooooooring to watch. He told us he had loads of european links with top clubs but didnt sign anyone of note - In fact a few panic signings like Shefki Kuqi were brought in and what a muppet he is. Anyway guys, good luck. Sousa is already a forgotten man in Swansea and we're all glad to see the back of him.

This is the part I don't understand. Surely a team's style of play is down to the manager rather than their history?

Oh you'll be ok with Brendan Rodgers then, he doesn't do boring, he normally does defeats by at least the odd goal or three.

Until you are 18th in the league after 10 games and wondering where it all went wrong.

Lets see what the Reading fans have to say about your new guy shall we. I can't imagine it will be "I loved the bloke, he worked the players really hard and the football wasn't boring.... who cares if we were in the relegation zone, all I want is for him to run the players until their bollocks drop off".

I believe he fell out with the chairman after he wouldn't back him in the transfer market... so that answers two questions.

I agree that Rodgers is a shot in the dark. However not one single Swans fan i know (or read about in our forums) is gutted about Paulos departure. Rodgers was never 1st choice (In fact about 5th). But it comes to something when we are happy about a fifth choice manager than keeping Sousa. As i said - Im a swans fan in peace. No piss taking - No wind up - Just my thoughts on Mr Sousa. If im wrong at the end of the season then ill swallow my words. Once again, Goodluck this season. You (and us) are going to need it

But if you would have finished 6th and went up would it had still been the same?

Well he's already brought in a guy from Benfica and has been linked with other guys from European clubs, maybe his hands at times were tied at Swansea???

In the end it's a case of wait and see with us Leicester fans and we either see something totally different from what you Swansea fans saw or we see similar.. BUT even still if he takes us into the play-offs again i don't think i'd be moaning much? results buisness in the end isn't it?

I can see it all now

"Boss, me and a few of the lads would like to do a bit of extra training , you know get our fitness levels up like"

"Bollocks to that - feck off to the pub or I'll fine you a weeks wages"

That's a very good point - my guess is that it should read 'not suited to the Swans PLAYERS'.

Looks like a shit attempt at mind games

Whos is this Benfica fella? Has anyone on here honestly heard of him before he came to Leicester.

Been at Benfica for 3 years, played 20 times including a season on loan at Aves (Played 7 times).

Sounds cracking!!!!

He's also only a very young age, so judging someone of his age on appearances is wank.

Well we ain't exactly gonna sign superstars now are we? neither are Swansea! but saying he don't have European contacts is obviously wrong, he does but he ain't gonna go out and sign Ronaldo.. Plus this Benfica guy is highly rated by many a Benfica fan and playing 20 times or not for Benfica is good going

I must admit, he doesn't show up on my football manager game even with the huge database

Benfica rate vitor at 15m. They're a top class european side, this lad is only young so he'll only play in nothing games until he's ready. A bit like the top teams in england do with their young talent.

Brendan rodgers or paulo sousa? I know who i'd have any day of the week. I hate it when nothing clubs moan about things because they've had a better than average season.

Well I for one am grateful for the comments from the Swansea fan, like he's said if he's wrong he'll eat his words.

My major concern about Pearson's departure was the effect on the backroom staff, our sports science dept had a massive impact on fitness levels and injury incidents. One wouldn't think that someone with Sousa's career history would overlook fitness but the sports science depts has been decimated since Pearson's departure and if the Mercury is to be believed the pre season training hasn't been as fitness based as previously.

Time will tell but our success last season was based on high fitness levels.

One quick question for the Swans fan is whether they deployed a zonal defence and how it worked out?
