Ronnie Radford, Hereford v Newcastle 3rd round replay 5th February 1972.
I travelled up to Filbert Street from London that day full of hope for a great cup run, convinced that we were destined to win the FA Cup some time soon.
We had a strong team out that day for the 4th round tie including Cross, Nish and Glover who’d all played in the final three years earlier. The only inexperienced player was the debutant keeper Carl Jayes and Second Division Leyton Orient weren’t expected to trouble him much behind a defence of Whiteworth, Sjoberg, Cross and Nish.
My memory (such as it is) is that Orient, who included Leicester legend to be Dennis Rofe and European Cup winner to be Ian Bowyer in their ranks, played us off the park and won 2-0.
I do remember clearly my journey back home being miserable thinking that Match of The Day was going to be one long celebration of The Orient. I had no idea at the time of the exploits of Radford and George.
Match of The Day was fantastic to watch that night. Leicester and Orient went almost uncommented on, Hereford had saved my day!
Orient went on to beat the winners from two years earlier Chelsea 3-2 in the 5th round before going out 1-0 to the holders Arsenal in the quarter finals.
The FA Cup, you have to love it.
