Yeah I never actually thought he would come here, I'm just surprised he's dropped down to the Super Liga. He could go to Netherlands or back to Portugal for example.
-
Yeah I get that and obviously the Champions league is a big draw, but the Super Lig is something like the 8th or 9th best league in Europe, surely he could go to Portugal or Netherlands and be in the same position? I don't think Jose was a serious suggestion, but if he's going to the 9th league in the European pyramid just to get Championship football and manage Fred surely the Premier League would be a bigger prospect?

A manager I've always liked since he was at Wednesday is Carlos Carvalhal, Had a bit of a rough couple of jobs recently, but did a good job at Wednesday with a nutcase chairman who used to interfere in the dressing room and demand certain players are played, went to Swansea in December and almost kept them up having taken over in a perilous position. Went to Rio Ave and led them to Europa League qualification with their best-ever points tally. Went to Braga and lost the league cup final to Sporting, but won the Taca de Portugal beating Benfica 2-0 in the final (beat Porto also) Finished 4th in the league and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League beating Monaco on the way (same season we got knocked into the Europa Conference) I'm not sure he would be right for us, but would be an interesting one no doubt.
-
Isn't this evidence that we potentially could have got him though? We are in a state but the Premier League vs the Super Lig is a bit of a no brainer for me.

As a manager, you always back yourself, and you don't turn down a bigger club just incase you can't meet the board expectations, he overachieved with the squad/money he had. The delusions of the WBA board are irrelevant to us either way. I think if we think staying up will be hard, we need someone who would be willing to go down with us and build a project, we might struggle to find a manager with prem experience who would be willing to do that, Carlos' track record in the Championship is great. If anything, the delusions of WBA board is good for us.
-
WBA fans refer to him as "King Carlos" which is a very rare thing to see. According to Transfermarkt he made 9 signings since arriving about 18 months ago and has spent a grand total of £0 (all loans +1 free), WBA fans think he did a phenomenal job. At Huddersfield (again according to TFM) he made 30 signings spending just £700k (give or take due to the nature of accurately getting the exact figures) and took them to the playoff final losing to an own goal. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/carlos-corberan/spielertransfers/trainer/16410/plus/0/galerie/0?station_id=403309

His board were deluded then. He signed 9 players since arriving, all on loan deals and 1x free transfer, what were WBA expecting?

The main problem is that we would need to go for someone inexperienced or unproven at the top level in that case, since someone like Moyes likely wouldn’t want to manage in the championship. It makes it far more likely we end up with someone from the championship or 2nd division elsewhere I’d imagine, but if it’s someone like Corberan I’d be happy enough to give him a free hit providing it looks like we are building something.
-
If he has a good relationship with some people at the club (ignoring the misleading of finances) we may be able to tap into a few cheap loans.
-
Yeah it puts us on the back foot regardless. I’d imagine if the deduction decision takes too long we will either have to gamble and spend a little bit more money and risk it, or basically build a younger, cheaper squad and just factor relegation into our plans. Ideally we just need them to slap us with the deduction now so we can properly plan, you’d think that would be the priority of the league too so we have a proper chance to right the ship. If they take too long, we risk going down because of lack of time to plan and execute which would only exacerbate the problem.
-
This being dragged out doesn’t really affect us unless it goes on right into pre season. I feel like we will likely have to wait until the points deductions are announced before we get the manager we want. I can’t see a serious manager like Potter taking us on without knowing what deductions we are facing. Unless it’s a young manager like Corberan who would be willing to go down with us and build a project in the Championship I think we need to hold our lines.
-
Was my #1 when Brendan got sacked, unfortunately no way we get close to his wages
-
Iraola at Bournemouth is the real deal imo, genuinely think he’s one of the more exciting European managers. 100% gets a top 6 club in the coming seasons
-
I saw numbers of about £2-3m when Leeds were interested, but even if it is £4m, it seems a lot for a manager, but considering just how much value we get if they can lift the club and keep us up, I'd rather gamble £4m on Corberan to come in and mould the club than buy a bang average Championship defender for double that price.
-
The more time I spend researching Corberan the more he goes up my list.
-
I think this is more likely where we will forced to go. If it's a small deduction and we find out quickly, someone like Moyes may come, if it's likely to be 8+ then we will probably have to bring in someone like Cooper/Corberan and give them a free hit on relegation and allow them to bring in some cheaper young players to mould over a few seasons.
-
I think -6 points he would come, if it's -10 I think he might just hold out for something else tbh.
-
This is why I think this will be dragged out. Why would a manager commit to a team that could get a -6 deduction or -15 for example, walking into a doomed season. The only ones who would take that would be desperate managers and I absolutely want to avoid them at all costs. I expect most managers will wait out for the punishment before committing, especially if they are already at a club. The point deduction will also massively change our approach, if it's -6 maybe we spend the maximum amount allowed under our financial constraints, if it's -15 maybe we sign some younger cheaper players for the championship. Expecting little movement on the manager/transfer front, then a desperate final few weeks.
-
To be honest I can't see him getting another premier league contract unless Southampton want him back, I'm sure he would want to stay here, and he would give us a bit of stability even if he's not starting every week. I'd imagine he would accept a 1 year deal with an extension option for appearances. He may want to take up the alledged Saudi offer unless we offer a 2 year deal.
-
I think that there are a large part of the fanbase (I hear it typically more from Enzo supporters who think he’s done an amazing job with an average team) who underrate many of our players imo. A back 4 of Kristiansen, Coady, a new CB or maybe even Vesty on a 1 year deal, with Ricardo **COULD** be solid under the right system. We are sorted on the wings with those 2 fullbacks overlapping Fatawu and Mavididi, Winks is good enough, If Ndidi stays he could do a half decent job. Mads is a prem keeper already. Obviously we massively lack depth, but we have a foundation that could keep us up with the right additions and the right system.
-
Niko Kovac would be a big coup imo. Wasn’t on my list as I’m not sure he would come here. He’s won the German cup + runner up, won the domestic Germany treble with Bayern, went to Monaco was runner up in the French cup. Just feel like even though he went to Wolfsburg he could go to a more stable club than us. But we are in the premier league so we can offer him a half decent contract. But does he want to potentially stick around if we get slapped with a big deduction and go down. Sadly I think this might get drawn out as managers will be waiting to see what the damage is before they commit. If someone like Kovac off the back of a tricky season at Wolfsburg comes to us and fails to get us going his career takes a big hit.
-
3 very good signings, but regarding LB we do have Kristiansen on the books, had a great season at Bologna and would have learned a LOT from Thiago Motta's tactics (they are well worth a watch on youtube) They finished 5th in the Serie A and he played 32 games, could very well be a player who comes back and flourishes under the right manager and would save us some cash, or we could easily cash in after the season he has had!
-
Carlos wouldn't be my first choice over Fischer or Moyes, but something about his approach appeals to me and if he got the job, I'd give him a free hit on relegation providing he's sensible with signings and makes us somewhat competitive. I actually think with a system that plays to our strengths, we do have a foundation of a team that could stay up if he gets the best out of them. We definitely need improvements, Vardy may leave and Ndidi needs to be on top form. But with 5-6 relatively cheap players and maybe 3-4 bench players, funded by KDH and a couple of out of contracts, alongside giving some younger players a chance, I think this foundation could be moulded into a system that could keep us up. We just NEED someone who is not wedded to a system and is willing to compromise the style to suit the team. Kristiansen overlapping Mavididi and Ricardo overlapping Fatawu could be a very strong start.

To be fair, he has a LOT of material to deflect any blame away from Enzo, and a lot of it will likely be justified
