  1. "Those who piece together what past climates were like in eras before thermometers and satellites – a practice known as palaeoclimatology – find that today’s temperatures are, when narrowly viewed, unremarkable. For example, the Eocene, an epoch lasting from 56m years to 34m years ago, was “screamingly hotter” than today, by about 10-15C, according to Matthew Huber, an expert in historical climates at Purdue University in the US. But, crucially, in the timespan in which humans evolved and formed organised societies, today’s global climate – a bit more than 1C hotter on average than it was in the preindustrial period before people started burning huge quantities of fossil fuels – is unparalleled. It has not been as hot as this for at least 125,000 years, prior to the last ice age, and most likely longer, potentially going back at least 1m years. “Humans have not faced a climate like this over our long history; we are starting to hit temperatures that are unprecedented,” said Huber. “It’s not like we will all become extinct, but we are messing with a thermostat that is pushing [us] outside a window we have been in during all of human civilisation.”" Quite. The planet is fine. The people (and numerous other species) are fvcked. Perhaps we might, you know, look to do something to stop that from happening?

    Ukraine

I think that they do have a plan for it, it's just that plan would involve weaponry invoking an unacceptable level of escalation, so they can't apply it. On the topic itself, I agree that Ukraine are doing the right thing here by staging a counter offensive away from the existing front lines and asking Russia some questions that it clearly wasn't ready to answer.

You see that a lot in this digital era, yes. Unfortunately, the issues they raise are often valid and people can and do use the aforementioned sanctimony to attempt to invalidate those issues, which can and does cause great harm past, present and future.
  4. Doesn't seem to make much sense, does it? I guess that does make more sense from a "there might be less overall traffic" theory, but not sure how well it works in practice. Seriously. That's the particular one I've been having to negotiate every day, as it happens.

Come on guys - I'd like to be able to keep talking about events like this on here and this is our last shot at it.
  6. I reckon this is still dependent on situation. Someone doing a thing beneficial to other people even using the height of condescention and "virtue signalling" to do so to boost their own ego is perhaps still "better" than those who have more humility but help less. For me, the results are what matter, rather than how they are achieved, but then I know others place more value on appearance than I do, and that matters.
  7. There seems to be roadworks practically everywhere you look right now. Something of a farce.
  8. Fair to ask the question but it's a bit loaded for a forum with topics like this on their last chance that hasn't been open a week, Wymsey.
  9. That this is even a discussion for people resident in the UK now shows how things are changing.
  10. https://spacenews.com/chinese-rocket-stage-breaks-up-into-cloud-of-more-than-700-pieces-of-space-debris/ HELSINKI — A Chinese Long March 6A rocket’s upper stage has fragmented into a cloud of over 700 pieces of space debris, adding to concerns about long-term orbital safety. China launched the Long March 6A rocket Aug. 6 from Taiyuan spaceport carrying a first batch of 18 flat panel Qianfan (“Thousand Sails”) satellites to 800-kilometer-altitude polar orbit. The rocket’s upper stage, having been modified for restarts to deploy multiple satellites, was then noted to have created a field of at least 50 pieces of debris Aug. 7 by Slingshot Aerospace, a space-tracking and data analytics firm. Well, that's not great.
  11. Much more of an issue for propellor driven aircraft than jets that fly at those altitudes, IIRC. Icing has sadly been the end of a lot of aircraft.
  12. Depends on the stall and the situation, though Line-X will know more specific details than I about that.
  13. I don't think it's definitely a mentality issue, but something is responsible for the medals/goldmedals ration for Team GB being slanted entirely in the wrong direction and it would be good to find out what it is.
  14. Our total medal count is superb, more than meeting expectations. There's just not enough top step among them.
  15. Pretty much. Team GB made me look like a right chump on this one tbh - been so dominant in the velodrome in recent times and I thought they would be again, this time though the rest of the world has caught up or they've simply been poor.

That the difference between "information backed by scientific consensus that caused several orders of magnitude more good than harm" and "information based on no proof whatsoever that is clearly and deliberately designed to incite violence against a particular demographic" is not being grasped here is either incredibly ignorant or malicious.

I can only imagine the horror they've experienced. Depressing, too, yes. Fair to say. I'll think about it a bit more.

I would think to start a thread on the current events in Gaza because quite frankly that whole thing pisses me off something fierce, but I also think that could get very ugly very quickly. What do other folks think?

Don't forget the US elite attitude of "I made it by myself totally, apart from a massive bunch of cash and networking contacts from my parents but that doesn't count" too. That particular brand of individualist delusion would be hilarious if it wasn't so consequential.

Well, he's got an NGO with a fleet of orbital rockets, so he's got that Blofeld part down pat.
