This game will show whether Martin is learning anything about his squad - and whether he’s actually willing to compromise his tactics to solve problems and get the best out of players. Every game so far he has structured the central midfield in a 1-2; one holding, two advanced, or a pair of 8’s if you will. However; what’s been quite apparent for all of the games so far is that approach has left us too vulnerable on transition; it’s costing us goals. Add in that Chaplin is quite clearly a quality player, you want to get him in your side in his best position and with the space to create - so you want him as the classic number. That means a switch to a 2-1 midfield; two holding (at least initially), one advanced; feels like a necessity this weekend - especially given you can imagine Braybrooke and Page could work really well as a pair in those slots. There really is no reason for Martin not to do this. But will he do this? Will he make a switch to his desired shape? My hunch is no 😏 - i guess we’ll know for sure shortly after 12:30 on Saturday.

Exactly - he’s now Ayew - it’s reasonable to think we have something to work with. All we need to do now, is work on what sort of chances he needs to be successful and how to present those to him. This might highlight why we also went wrong with Daka and Mussa, because with them we were trying to replicate Vardy’s pace… but by then we were supplying him based on his intelligence and movement ability, making both alternatives a bad fit.

A big clue as to determining the level of his performances over the past two games is how disjointed we’ve looked when he came off. He’s only been here just over a week and yet we look much better as a unit when he’s on the pitch because he’s actually leading the line. He’s enthusiastic, you can see he runs hard and seems to be taking up decent positions; so hopefully squad connections grow across the rest of this week so that come Saturday, we can provide him with a couple of chances at least.

This has come from broken play - we’ve just given the ball away on the edge of the box. That we got players that have rushed back to get behind the ball is positive - you can’t be to critical about shape.
