Brazilians normally acquire Portuguese Passports.

I was about to say that. People from other south American countries often have Spanish as a second nationality, as well.

We had a south American in the youth team not long ago, didn't we? Can't remember his name now.

I don't think he can Leave Brazil until aged 18, But cant really complain if we signed him and left him over there for 2 years anyway, He'd get alot of time to play, Worse comes to worse with the Permit is we sign him then send him straight out on loan, Alot of countries that will let him play first team abit,

I've never really understood the work permit thing. It's not like he is going to be claiming benefits & demanding a house is it?

I think it's more an iniative to stop our national team being so inept I think.

Work permits apply to any worker from outside the EU regardless of profession. In lots of cases, to get one, you have to prove there is no-one in the UK or European Union who is available to do the job to the required standard. It's a bit different for football since they fall into a different visa category for 'exceptional talent', their level of proof is basically showing they can competete on international stage (i.e. national team). All non-EU visas, inlcuding this one, also come with no access to public funds (benefits of any kind, inc. housing) and most have a yearly charge to use the NHS. People on actual non-EU visas don't get access to any of the shi*e you see in the Daily Mail.

Making our young players see moves abroad as viable options would help more with that

Just been mentioned on the world football phone in on 5 live.

Tim Vickery was impressed that he'd made the bench as a 16-year-old.

Said that Gremio have produced some real talent over the years, most notably, Ronaldinho.

He's also been linked to Man Utd, but it can't happen until he turns 18, as mentioned earlier in the thread.

Unless his family move here for non footballing reasons.

I'd definitely like us to start tapping into the South American market. I believe I'm right in saying we've never bought a player from a South American club?

It's a market we can do well in as it's a true hotbed of talent and as we're richer than any South American clubs we can offer the players a route to Europe and better wages. We also have one advantage over the bigger clubs in that making our first team is easier than Man Utd, Barcelona, etc.

By being interested in this 16 year old could well mean we are now scouting South America, it would be crazy not to.
