Bellend Sebastian Posted 23 September 2015 Posted 23 September 2015 As far as I'm aware the claimed MPG is done entirely by the manufacturer, not government or independent regulators. So it's probably meaningless. :-/ I'm not sure that's right...I think they ARE government figures, but based on tests that in no way represent real world conditions, which is why there's as often as not a big difference between the claimed fuel consumption and what drivers actually get, however careful they are. For all we know motor manufacturers may have been abusing these in similar ways to the emissions tests. I've never actually bothered to work out what MPG my car actually does, but I suppose I should. The figure the fuel computer gives (which isn't likely to be very accurate) is predictably some easy short of what the manufacturer suggests is possible, and the reality may be even worse. Hey ho

Hey ho I'm guessing there are little tricks and work-arounds allowed such as submitting their base model for the testing, so long as it has the same engine - i.e. no AC, no electric windows, no spare wheel etc. Which in reality nobody ever buys.
katieakita Posted 23 September 2015 Posted 23 September 2015 Alfa Romeos for me so at least it should stop the VW Audi group putting another bid in to buy them off Fiat. Pure greed on the part of VW after all the sell plenty.

The fact that one manufacturer has been caught with their pants down by using software to deceive, even though this has probably more to do with the US protecting their own car companies than anything else. ( They did the same with Toyota when they were the no1 manufacturer), probably means that we as consumers are being deceived by using fancy trickery which , at the end of the day, drives up the cost of because of so called advanced technologies.
Collymore Posted 23 September 2015 Posted 23 September 2015 This is just bad news for driving enthusiasts. I drive a VW group sport diesel and I was always amazed how low my emissions score was in a MOT! It literally hardly ever registered compared to other makes of diesel I've owned.... The way the media are playing this baffles me. It makes out everyone works for green peace and they buy the cars to save the enviroment! Bull shit. I'd happily trade a few trees for a few extra horse power. The great thing before they were caught was that you paid lower road tax! this is bad news for performance minded drivers and good news for road tax man + annoying green drivers...

Dude, we're not talking about 'a few trees', we're talking about deliberately hiding chucking out a chemical into the atmosphere that causes people to die in their thousands, and not hypothetically a few years down the line, but actually right now. If it wasn't a big deal the head of VW wouldn't have walked. Anyway http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/sep/22/volkswagen-air-pollution-uk-poisoning-government-legislation
katieakita Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 Do the RAC vans that have to keep fixing Alfas count towards the emissions? Thought the survey was now not 20 yrs ago, you do need mechanics who know what they are doing and in Leicester their is a company called Intaservices that are brilliant. Some get the Alfa thing some don't and at least Claudio would approve it you have one
ScouseFox Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 Kia are still cool though, right? I've still got one so
Bellend Sebastian Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 Awkward: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/sep/24/uk-france-and-germany-lobbied-for-flawed-car-emissions-tests-documents-reveal

The manufacturers used to supply cars for test with thinner glass in the windows and all sorts of other weight reductions for the government tests
ozleicester Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 CEO of VW resigns, says he knew nothing about the dodgy stuff (i thought these guys were paid the millions because they were on top of everything?) and is in line for a $50 Million Dollar payout. This capitalism bullshit is failing.
purpleronnie Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 Such a truly great American story, lets build a car that has low emissions, nah **** it lets just cheat.

katieakita Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 I've got a 4C, it's the best pile of crap ever and probably the coolest car on FT, i can see Claudio next season racing around Leicester in a Guilia, foot to the floor.

simmo1977 Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 It gets worst, it's just been announced that indicators on BMW's only working whilst the MOT is being done and never work the rest of the time the car is being used.
yorkie1999 Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 Maybe the powers that be just want people to stop buying "trendy" diesels because of the lack of revenue these cars are generating due to doing many many miles to the gallon. With any luck petrol prices will fall to get people to switch over, and my 22 to the gallon car won't cost so much to run.
Guest Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 Will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next couple of years. Will VW be selling off its brand portfolio to raise capital? Is the "vw" badge so tarnished that they shift Audi, skoda or seat into being the new frontline marquee?
Guest Posted 24 September 2015 Posted 24 September 2015 Genuinely feel bad for the vw sales people. I'd be expecting triple commission on any sales managed over the next 6 months.

Or will they start selling Golf GTi's for 10 grand a piece, still make 5 grand a car, and everyone buys one.
