May can't call an election without going to parliament, it's different rules now.

That statement gives everyone a reason to force her into it.

I thought it might happen until I watched Angela Eagle and Diane Abbot on Channel 4 news both failing to answer 'yes' to the question of, 'Would you vote for a general election'.

The panic on Eagle's face when asked the question just re-enforced that she is nowhere near leadership material.

Labour are dying, a general election is the last thing they need!!!!

So Theresa May is going to ensure that:

- the poor enjoy more of the fruits of growth;

- there are workers' representatives on boards;

- shareholders' votes on fat cat pay are binding;

- mental health is a higher priority;

- affordable homes for the young is a higher priority;

- sex discrimination in pay is tackled;

- racial discrimination in criminal justice is tackled;

She certainly sounds a strong contender.......to be Labour leader!

"Are you Miliband in disguise?"  :whistle:

The things I've highlighted in blod have been the cornerstone in Tory policy for the last years, isn;t it now about £12,500 a year until you pay any tax at all?

Will Cameron remain an MP?

Yes, until 2020 at least.

Sky poll from yesterday (

) Who would make a better PM?

May 62%

Don't know 20%

Corbyn 18%

I think May will absolutely hoover up centre ground votes, even more so among women.

Doesn't do to take things too seriously. Highlighting things in blood? :blink:

If I'd been polled, I'd have voted May - and that's before she came out with her socialist plan for government. :D

I've just noticed Corbyn is behind "don't know" in the poll lol

On a serious point it's because of New Labour the Tories are so central now, probably because of that politically they seem to have nowhere to go.

I must admit I didn't like some of the things Mrs May was saying about interfering in the boardroom. Does Cornyn have any plans to privatise anything that I could vote for? :D

Nah, have you seen her eat a bacon sandwich?

May will wipe the floor with Corybn if they go against each other. I can't see Corbyn beating her in any shape or form really. As others have said, I think May is going to do well to take the centre ground of the country.

I can't believe it.

Who would have thought with Labour lurching to the hard-left the Tories would pick up the centre ground? Didn't see that coming at all.

Possibly (probably on a personal level v. Corbyn). However, "fine words butter no parsnips", as my Dad says.  :D

Lots of politicians produce fine rhetoric that they don't live up to.

Even assuming she is sincere in her stated ambitions, she's likely to have a hell of a job achieving them. At the risk of accusations that I'm unduly pessimistic, most forecasters expect the UK to suffer a moderate to severe economic downturn over 2-3 years. We already have high levels of debt and an ongoing deficit, and are likely to have to pay higher interest on this. Public services are already creaking at the seams - and demographic factors (aging population, rising birthrate) will place extra pressure on this. The EU is in a mess and the global economy isn't brilliant.

In addition, Brexit negotiations may prove difficult. It's highly unlikely that we'll be able to stay in the single market AND control our own borders, as many seem to expect. Many also expect a large fall in immigration, which may or may not be forthcoming. There are also expectations that we'll quickly and easily negotiate lucrative trade deals with other nations worldwide....might not be that quick or easy. There may be massive issues over Scottish independence and the Irish border.

If May takes the Tories into a 2020 election with the economy and public finances even at current levels and society reasonably stable, she'll have done an extraordinarily good job. If she's also improved life for the poor and low-paid, reformed corporate culture, boosted affordable housing for the young and improved mental healthcare provision, she'll be a miracle worker and I'll gladly kiss the ground she walks on in Downing Street.  :D

However, I must admit to a sense of relief that someone vaguely competent and not obviously harsh or venal is taking charge. We should still strap ourselves in for a roller-coaster ride lasting several years, though.

Recessions usually occur every 8 or 9 years so we're due one soon anyway.

Here's a list of UK recessions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_recessions_in_the_United_Kingdom

You're not far off, but the regularity of recessions clearly fluctuates and has different causes. Interesting to note that, historically, most recessions occur under Tory governments.  :whistle:

Anyway, you get your excuses in early, Webbo.  :D
