TiffToff88 Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 As the topic title states, The RAC claim that they fix 4 out of 5 breakdowns at the location of your breakdown. I'm with the RAC, and have actually needed roadside assistance 5 times over the years, for various different reasons from breakdowns to crashes. Every single time they have come out to me, they pull up and pull my car straight onto their trucks, making absolutely no attempt to even look at the problems with my car. Does anyone know where the 4 out of 5 statistic comes from? Have any of you ever had your car repaired roadside?
Bellend Sebastian Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 5 call outs in my life, 3 repairs at roadside. Mind you, I've never been with the RAC. The 2 that couldn't be fixed weren't the sort of things that you'd expect them to be able to do - major electrical things. The others were a knackered battery, a flat tire and a stuck accelerator cable
davieG Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 2 call outs in too many years to mention both with the AA although I have had a spell with the RAC until I fell out with them over a special offer which turned out to cost me more. A flat/knackered battery and a puncture which I couldn't do because I'd pull in to close to the kerb and didn't fancy trying to manoeuvre in case I wrecked the wheel. Both fixed on the spot which you'd expect
kingcarr21 Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 Its probably bullshit. They just say it to make you think they are amazing. Yet when you are the vehicle that cant be done it's 'Oh you must be the unlucky one out of 5' Same with cleaning products that clean 99.9% dirt. Oh so when i buy this and it doesn't clean the stain i suppose that stain just happens to be the 0.1%. Its just a way to cover their own arse so people cant take them to court for false advertising
DB11 Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 My own vehicle has been sorted at the roadside on all three occasions. I've experienced various other times and generally most are fixed at the roadside.
Saxondale Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 I've often wondered this, given that they basically can't fix anything. The simple explanation is that the vast majority of their call-outs are for pratty little things like flat tyres, overheating and idiots running out of fuel. I suspect the number of genuine breakdowns they fix at the roadside is about 1 in 1,000. I've called the AA twice: once when i snapped a track rod end and the bloke wrongly diagnosed it as a smashed steering rack and once when the hydraulic line between the master and slave cylinder split meaning I had no clutch. Both times they towed.
Webbo Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 RAC men aren't mechanics, they know a few basic things and that's it. You wouldn't want an amateur trying to fix your car anyway.
Parafox Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 Been towed by the RAC 3 times out of 3 breakdowns. Each time it was a local on call garage operating on behalf of the RAC. Guess where they towed me? To their own garage.. surprise surprise!!!

Strokes Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 We have been with Green Flag for nearly a decade, they have always been excellent for us. Plenty of roadside fixes, no fuss or hassle and half the price of the AA or RAC. Genuinely cannot fault them.

Used them once about 10 years ago. Think a cv boot shaft thingy popped out so couldn't be fixed roadside. Towed to a garage of my choice (AC motors Syston!) mrs used them about 8 years back when she went on a hen do. Got a puncture on some B road halfway to Blackpool (the fvck nugget set her sat nav to avoid motorways lol) changed the tyre herself but decided to leave the key in the ignition to listen to her favourite now! CD. 20 mins later her shitroen saxo won't start the battery has died and she's stranded middle of fvcking nowhere with no jump leads. AA sorted her out.

Webbo Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 Pro Tip: Always challenge your renewal fee. I got the RAC to knock £30 off this year.

I've used both the AA and RAC with work vehicles and never had any problems tbf.
