Foxes1 Posted 23 November 2016 Posted 23 November 2016 If we sign anyone in the transfer window in January will they be allowed to play in the Champions League last 16. I am assuming that if they have already played in it this season we won't, but what about if they haven't already played in it.
AKCJ Posted 23 November 2016 Posted 23 November 2016 I think it works like this (say we're after Silva from Sporting again). Scenario 1 Sporting qualify for last 16 then we sign Silva - He won't be able to play. Scenario 2 Sporting fail to qualify for last 16 then we sign Silva - He will be able to play.

Any player who has played in the group stage for another club cannot play in the same competition for a different club. Using Silva's example, he would NOT be eligible as he has played in the group stages for Sporting. That also means, no player will really want to leave Leicester for another club in January (e.g. Mahrez moving to Barcelona would mean he cannot play in the CL, just an example).
4ever and ever Posted 23 November 2016 Posted 23 November 2016 Can we sign players from Europa League sides like Genk (the young midfielder we are reportedly after) and they be eligible for CL?

No, they class UEFA competitions as one group. So doesn't matter if it's a Europa League or Champions League team they have played for. Qualifying rounds only is OK but if they have played for a team in the group stage it is not. Was trying to make sense of the regulations earlier, regulations always use complicated phrasing.
harpendenfox Posted 23 November 2016 Posted 23 November 2016 by late February and the round of 16 Mendy will be fit, he and Drinkwater will being complementing each other like bacon and eggs, Vardy will have scored in six consecutive games and Slimani banging in headers left right and centre. Barca / Dortmund / Bayern / any old club from Madrid will be dreading their trip to Les-tah

We can sign and register one player to our CL squad who played in the Europa League group stages.

Yes correct, the rule makes sense to me now: "One player from the above quota of three who has been fielded in a UEFA club competition group stage match for another club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded: a. in the same competition for another club; or b. for another club that is currently in the same competition." So as you say, Europa League players are fine.
