I went to bed after the 3rd quarter and I couldn't believe it when I woke up.

Falcons D were brilliant up front and in coverage for 45 minutes. What happened to them?! You've got to expect the Patriots to come back from 25 down to some extent but to throw it away like that is insane.

What happened to them? They were exhausted, the falcons offence did them no favours with the 3 and outs. The catches from Edelman and Jones were utterly insane. We've been truly spoilt for such an awesome final.

On reflection this has to be one of the worst collapses in a final in any sport. It's all very well talking about Brady but Atlanta needed one play. One stop, avoid one sack, one short gain to set up a field goal. A failure of unbelievably epic proportions.

They spursed it.

The falcons strength was also their weakness - they were a young side.

They went right at it in the first half but had limited  experience to cope with the onslaught in the second half

Brilliant game for a neutral though....

So it needed coaches and the experienced QB to get them through. They didn't.

Hows an experienced QB going to stop a rampaging Brady pulling the strings?

By not panicking when all he has to do is get his team in field goal range?

See above. Tbf I don't blame Ryan as much as the coaches or the penalty for holding. The strip sack earlier on wasn't his fault. But just after the Julio catch, that's your chance to seal the game. Run the ball or even take a knee, then kick the FG. They knew at that point Brady was on fire and they just gave it back to him in the stupidest way possible.

And in Ryan's defence he was let down by poor blocking on both of those plays (on the first by Freeman of all people).

but he cant stop a raging offence or defense... Its really not all down to just him... the protection he was given for that wasnt that good either... they just  couldnt give him the protection he needed

I'm not blaming him exclusively, I know Americans get obsessed with QBs but it's a team sport.

I don't think the Pats were rampaging and imperious, though, I think ATL were just absolutely ****ed. Looked exhausted in the last quarter, Pats just melted through them.

Some good plays, don't get me wrong, but other than a freak Edelman catch they didn't need anything jaw dropping.

Falcons just... stopped.

All NFL teams call two plays in the huddle, usually one pass play and one run play. The top QB's can see pre-snap when a play isn't going to work. Ryan could have adjusted his O-line's protection scheme to pick up the blitz or simply changed to the run play. He's not totally blameless.

No he's not. But it doesn't change the fact Freeman missed his assignment on the strip sack which could've bought him another second. And ultimately the blame has to fall on over-aggressive play calling. Falcons ran the ball four times after they went 28-3 up. I think I could've coached the 2nd half better. What is it about coaches minds going to jelly when facing Belichick in the SB?

True. If you open the door just slightly for Belichick and Brady they'll kick it off it's hinges.

Julio Jones' great catch should have been the clincher. The hard work was done and it should have been straightforward from there. No frills, just finish the job. After the game Dan Quinn and Kyle Shanahan mumbled something about ''staying true to their identity''. That's all very noble, but at some point pragmatism has to take over. When City were closing in on the title last season there were several games where we played for time down by the corner flag. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't 'sexy' football, but it helped win us the title.

If they claim they were exhausted i would have little sympathy for them.... NFL football has so many stoppages its hard to believe they got exhausted. Only a few of them actually do any  genuine running! Sure there's the physical activity involved  in the pushing/ blocking and taking some hits... but like i said, there's just so many stoppages!. Now that might be being a little harsh on the NFL: but they were a young team.. If they were exhausted, why wasnt a 40 year old tom Brady, who took some hits in the first half exhausted?

Now they DID look drained, but that could be because the  situation got to them- like overawed them , a rabbit caught in headlights, so to speak. I think that's a more likely explanation for them shutting down..

An NFL player's fitness regime and training is based entirely on developing their strength and explosiveness for those 5 second bursts of action. Stamina is an afterthought and their aerobic fitness is abysmal. If they played a game of football (our football that is) they'd be dropping like flies after about 2 minutes, if that.

Just watched the BBC highlights having not made ko Sunday.  Mainly due to beer lol

Still gotgot no idea how Atlanta lost that. Bizarre so many situations they chucked away in the 4th. Just basic yardage etc.

But fair play to the patriots for turning the screw from what looked like a loss.

However in the UK we take the piss our of spurs. But spurs never got that close to us how Atlanta recover from that. I have no idea.
