matty98 Posted 12 February 2017 Posted 12 February 2017 David Luiz, one of the best center backs in the world went for 30m in the summer.
m4DD0gg Posted 12 February 2017 Posted 12 February 2017 Said this in the summer. Its nauseating to be honest. Should have had Brady as well. In a different universe in terms of the crap we have bought and would not have come in like big time charlies and would have added not detracted. Yeh expensive but 15m on musa and 29m on slimani.....we were robbed and then some.
Number 6 Posted 12 February 2017 Posted 12 February 2017 Keane, Gibson, Maguire...any would have been great.
crazyleicester Posted 12 February 2017 Posted 12 February 2017 You got to laugh at some of the stuff in here. Can the OP say for 100% certain that we could have had him for £20m and they said no? If you work in the hierarchy of the club, please advise but I have a feeling you dont. I too am no expert but from what I understand in the press, we made a bid, Keane turned down a new contract offer as it looked he either wanted to force a move or get a better deal. We then made a further bid and Burnley said no. I remember seeing Dyche get wound up about clubs (more than likely aimed at us) trying to unsettle his players and said he was not for sale. We then went in with a third offer. From the outside it seems only a lunatic 40m offer would have tempted them to sell because they knew how integral he is to them. We tried, tried and tried again and didnt get him because they didnt budge despite the player trying to force a move. We did something similar with Leo in January. Arsenal tried to do that with Vardy last year and Liverpool with Chilwell. Sometimes clubs cant get there own way and this was another example. BTW, he is so important to them that even Chelsea were linked to him throughout December and into Jan along with Everton but Burnley are still not budging. Oh one thing, we had him on loan, he was outstanding and withing a year he moved to Burnley for 2m. If we made any mistake, it was we didnt buy him the first time around as it was obvious then that this lad could be an England International.
norwichfox Posted 12 February 2017 Posted 12 February 2017 Bearing in mind he wasn't for sale and didn't want to come here, no mistake made. We do need a quality centre back...but the tranbsfer window is slammed shut and no quality free agents that would be sharp enough for the position we find ourselves in.

We should have signed Keane after he was on loan to us.

We went for a young lad in Keane to try to introduce to the squad and team as longer term replacements for Huth and Wes. Only an idiot would have bought someone in to replace one of the two most consistent centre backs in the division last season and two major players in why we won the Championship. They showed no sign whatsoever last season that we need to worry about the centre back position, none at all. Its easy to be a wiseass after the event.
Guest Col city fan Posted 12 February 2017 Posted 12 February 2017 I think Dyche has made some great signings to be fair. He's gone for proven players from the English divisions, rather than foucussing on foreign talent. It seems to be working. They seem to have that mentality of we're all in it together. He's been very canny imo and in Robbie Brady they've signed a player I'd have liked at City.
Guest Mickyblueeyes Posted 12 February 2017 Posted 12 February 2017 It was. But at the time it seemed a stupid amount. He's worth it now, no question.

Soo many mistakes.

People think they know about transfer deals, they don't.

A joke player till this season and his managers ability to make him look better than he is i suspect PSG and Chelsea had a deal on this player returning all the time he would cost 60m for anyone this summer

Very fair comment I must say; especially since he played for us in 2013 and should have been purchased then!...but we didn't...perhaps Walsh and Pearson thought he was no good?

At the time i thought he would go on to play for United and we had no chance in keeping him. For some reason United preferred to keep on an ageing Rio Ferdinand and Sir Alex always liked Johnny Evans. When he was made available for sale I was really surprised we didnt make a move!

Completely agree, which is why I mentioned 3 young CBs. They were always both getting towards the end of their careers. I think most just wanted some young blood who could gain experience alongside them.

Compared to how much players go for these days it's well worth paying that for a player who may well keep you in the premier league, where staying us worth £70m these days...
