That McDonell is a twat.

I actually agree that large dividends and bonuses from the utilities are obscene, but repeatedly saying that nationalising rail, water and electricity etc would be cost-neutral is, at the very least, a bit of a stretch.

He doesn't even believe it himself, you can tell.

Meanwhile "every defeat of the British state is good for all of us" apparantly, the words of the shadow home secretary at one point. Scary as shit this lot are actually going up in the polls.

Your right nationalising won't be cost neutral because like in the case of East Coast we'll be making a profit and cash will be going straight into the exchequers books.

Railways could be tbf, just don't renew the franchises and the take over is handled without the cost of buying them out. Given the network is subsidised by us anyway, and east coast was returning profits while nationalised - cost effective isn't the issue really, it's being in power long enough for all the franchises to expire.

I thought the idea of nationalisation was that fares will come down instead of profit going to shareholders?

This is horrible watching Farron being questioned on religion again.

Abortion this time. Probably handled it as well as he could though.

I give Boris his due, he's giving this interview as much as he can, but there's something missing... I don't feel he fully believes the direction things are going (and Peston's picked at the thread a couple of times).

we become a target, if we don't have a threat of retaliation like nukes.

other countries will want our gold reserves and access to 210 million tonnes of minerals.

Lmao.

I hope you've written this in jest.

A target of who? Hardly any countries have there own nukes. The UK and France are the only countries in Europe.

Good point but East Coast cashed one billion quid for the treasury over the course of the nationalisation. Probably enough scope to reduces fees as well as do what McDonnell wants with part of it, pay into pensions or build infrastructure or whatever.

Scary as shit that the only reason tory supporters can come up with to vote for them is a bunch of negativity about the opposition.

True. My bad.

My point holds though. Nobody we'd seriously engage in a fight with has them and neither do most of our friends.

It made a loss last year so how on earth are we going to reduce fairs, fund pensions and build infrastructure?

You don't find it at least slightly odd the person who wants to be in charge of our security services once called defeat of the British state a victory for all?

You don't think that's at least worth mentioning?

Can we get this thread back on the track of the slaughter of foxes & elephants and child starvation?

Christ even if I were a Tory I'd rather vote for a Corbanistic ideological wet dream than a strong and stable reality of a Cruella Deville doing whatever she wants with basic concepts of fairness, equality and a moral compass which only points in the direction of income generation.

I also really do wonder just what this woman/party is capable of in terms of privacy the environment and criminal justice without EU legislation to stand in the way...

So true mate I'm not some Green voting SJW but species conservation is important to me and on one of the basic scales on how you judge a persons humanity, how they treat animals, Theresa May is looking like a sociopathic mess.

Well I'm anecdotally seeing (unsure yet on what scale) a section of Tory's who are a bit unsettled / disillusioned with the manifesto and direction of the Party on issues such as animal cruelty, environment and privacy....

There's a reasonable argument for nationalisation and I'd have thought in the long run the aim would be to be cost neutral. We managed to set up a national health service when the country really was broke so the idea we couldn't re-nationalise rail and utilities when we are actually doing relatively well doesn't add up.

Who cares if we all poorer eh as long as we are all equal?

Slaughter of Elephants and Foxes because of wanting to give a free vote and no ivory ban? Child starvation?

Get a grip of yourself for crying out loud.
