TiffToff88 Posted 9 June 2017 Posted 9 June 2017 Just wondering if any of you have ever had an idea patented? I've had what i think is a potentially great idea, ,which I don't think has been done before (At least not in the way I want to do it) but have no idea on the costs or processes involved in getting an idea patented. It's an idea i've been working on for a couple of years now and similar things are beginning to appear on the market so i want to tie my idea down sooner rather than later. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Anyone can read a step-by-step guide but you get a lot more from talking to actual people who have been through the process

LiberalFox Posted 9 June 2017 Posted 9 June 2017 I studied this a bit at uni which I know is rubbish compared to real world experience but for what it's worth: 1) Make sure you have a business plan for whatever it is you are trying to invent. 99% (I made that up yes) of ideas fail to reach the market for business reasons. 2) You can't patent an idea, it has to be a very specific design or process. 3) When you patent something you need to focus very specifically on what is innovative and why having a patent would be important, sometimes more than one patent in necessary. 4) You can't go it alone, at some point you'll have to start paying an expert. However, you can avoid wasting money by searching for existing patents and designs. Essentially if you are good at business then you are much more likely to succeed with or without a patent. Also if "similar" things are appearing on the market, how different is your idea?
davieG Posted 9 June 2017 Posted 9 June 2017 I've got my name on one but it was through my job it's also past being of any use now. As I remember it a very expensive time consuming process and the searching is a nightmare for which you'll need to employ a specialist. You need to be very confident your idea is truly unique and will go on to be viable to manufacture, assuming it's a product but most of all that it will make you some decent money because clearly good unique ideas more often that not don't. Best of luck with it you'll need it.
sylofox Posted 9 June 2017 Posted 9 June 2017 Unless you have serious funding for production costs and advertising I would say you best bet would be to sell it. Even if you get a patent you need serious cash to take it to court if someone steels your design. Getting a huge Chinese manufacture into court may never happen.
