Suella Braverman is a ghoul but I've met plenty of 1st and 2nd generation immigrants born in England who see themselves as British not English, and telling a British Indian that "actually I think you'll find you are English" feels a little like Anglo arrogance to me. Also using football players as examples is a little stupid - Marc Guehi is not English, Russell Martin is not Scottish, as much as I'd like to banish him to the northern tip of the Isle of Lewis.

Over the last few months I’ve been watching old British sitcoms and I think I’ve come to the conclusion Fawlty Towers is pretty overrated.

Also don’t think John Cleese is that great in it

Agreed. I much prefer Rising Damp.

Nope never seen an episode

I don’t think Fawlty Towers is bad by any means. Just not as good. In my opinion anyway, which means absolutely nothing.

I personally do like it, but I feel as it was a short lived show the memories of it are maybe better than a program was that dragged out to death if that makes sense. Like it was great at the time, but re watching somethings are just not as enjoyable as times change. I recon if I sat and watched The Mighty Boosh tonight for the first time in 15 or so years, I'd not enjoy it anywhere near as much today as I did then.

There are styles and humour that doesn't show up as great looking back at it, similar to the issues how Little Britain, That Mitchell and Webb Look and The Inbetweeners are getting looked at now even as more recent shows.

We live in a society where everyone is offended by everything so I guess as time has gone on comedy has become more sanitised to appease this.

Exactly this.

I don’t find anything older than me funny tbh I’ve seen bits of Fawlty Towers, Only Fools etc and they do nothing for me. It’s probably a generational thing and not “people being offended by everything these days”

For what it’s worth my criticism had nothing to do with being offended by anything. Just didn’t find it as good as I remembered.

Right, but that's apparently an easy accusation to level and statement to make about such things these days, as true as it may or may not be.

How often do you actually hear people say something in an old TV show offended them?

Feel like it’s something the media just make a big deal out to cause the trouble.

It’s like at Christmas the Daily Mail will do an article saying people have complained about the use of “Father” Christmas. When really nobody cares

I unreservedly agree.

It doesn't seem to stop the strawman being trotted out to set fire to by those with an axe to grind, though.

This isn't remotely true.

A few things wouldn't get put into sketch shows now to suit modern tastes but there's plenty of very dark humour out there.

Pretty sure Birmingham has been banning Christmas in favour of 'Wintervall' since I was a teenager according to the daily mail

I think replacing the licence fee with an £11 a month broadband levy makes sense

I think in this day and age that shouldn't really be unpopular tbh - such costs and means have to move with rapidly changing times. As long as the funding continues to go where it is required.

On a similar note, I agree absolutely with the cross party recommendation that the BBC charter should be perpetual, not renewed every 10 years.

It will just be easier to capture the people that don't pay the fee and claim they don't watch the BBC, as they wont be able to survive not paying for broadband.

There's something in that too.

The old billing model has had its day, so as long as the funding stream remains consistent, change is a good idea.

Reduces the cost to the consumers that aren't breaking the law too!

Wasn’t that Game of Thrones?
