He's American.

He was a US citizen though I believe he gave it up.

He's English and a product of our culture and education system. If he was American he'd be a vulgar nepo baby businessman and criminal turned reality TV star.

Brits seem to me to have a tendency to claim good things as totally British (chicken tikka woo! Mo Farah woo!) and bad things as foreign (Boris Johnson boo! Royal Family boo!)

Mo Farah is Somalian.

Winston Churchill was American.

Happy now?

Winston Churchill was born in England: his mother was American but his father was British

The above discussion re the definitions of nationality is a good demonstration as to why the whole debate is in essence truly absurd, and even more absurd is the idea that quite a few people seem perfectly prepared to harm, kill and die in the name of it.

Most things these days are absurd tbh.

Stupidity seems to be a general trait of humanity.

To be fair quite a lot of people in history have harmed, killed and died precisely because they didn't want to be British.

In general, people are strongly opposed to being forced to becoming something that they're not.

I'm inclined to think no more stupid than things have been in the past, but we simply get to hear about a lot more of it these days.

Right, and that's a decent sized chunk of what I'm talking about there.

The whole idea of something even the definition and description of remains a matter of debate being so important to some people that they'll inflict the most horrific atrocities in the name of it is just...well, absurd to me, as per above.

Mind you, I can't say it's alone in that regard.

It might surprise some, but I don't think people are stupid on the whole - just wilfully ignorant and tribal at times.

I think if you're from a small country and small language group that has historically faced domination from a larger empire, ethnicity/nationality are very important and you'll be very protective of it, and often Brits find that hard to appreciate because of our own history.

We should allow more of the cheap Chinese EVs and not enforce tariffs. But at the same time start taking income from road pricing to cover resurfacing and maintaining the nation's roads.
