filbertuk Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 Seeing Everton's defeat against Atalanta in the Europa Cup revived a very old memory...A match at Filbert Street in 1972 in the Anglo Italian Cup - we beat Atalanta 6-0. I was 11 and have a vivid memory of hundreds of koppites walking around the pitch to change end at half time. Anyone else remember this? The net tells me the attendance was 10949!

We win 6-0 but Blackpool win 10-0 so we're knocked out. Only Leicester. (Love these random old memories by the way)
Voll Blau Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 Now there's a competition that needs reviving...
Spudulike Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 I remember it. I was in Pen 3 with my school mates given it the big 'un (as we did back then ) and as it was chucking it down we didn't fancy the march down to the Filbert Street end. Lots of space left in the Kop in the second half and I can recall seeing the other end bouncing, chanting and celebrating goals like away fans. No seats in 1972. I've still got the programme. We really do need a time machine.
Finnegan Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 I also remember we were linked to Papu Gomez when he was at Metallist. What a miss that is in hindsight.
VLC86 Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 Never knew we had played them before. Fully recommend a trip to their stadium if you ever get the chance, mental fans and it's a stadium that has character (Absolute shithole )
filbertuk Posted 15 September 2017 Author Posted 15 September 2017 That puts some meat on the bones for me! Good to read those replies.
soulieoldie Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 I was there. Changed ends at halftime and remember a glut of goals. That was probably the highlight of the tournament.
Durnerz Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 On the subject of crap stadiums I went to watch Fiorentina vs Udinese. Beautiful view of the Tuscan hills and lovely sitting in the sun watching a game but how that was a World Cup venue god only knows. The seating was so tight people had to physically climb down rows to get to their seats.
CosbehFox Posted 15 September 2017 Posted 15 September 2017 Cracking few posts from the guys there. After a bit of research, the games were played in June! Does anyone have memories of us playing in the Anglo-Scottish Cup? I remember the 90s edition of Anglo-Italian Cup which involved never playing an Italian club for the first part of the competition. I once overheard a conversation between Wolves fans and one of them had seen them play Leece away in the early 90s.

I know our goals were shared out, but memory fade has set in, (think either Sammels/Weller scored twice! Anyhow, they'd beaten us 5-3 at their 'gaffe', effectively marring our chances of reaching the final. I think the other Italian team in our group were Cagliari, who were arguably a much superior team to Atalanta, and gave us a tough game at 'Filbo' ....we edged that 2-1 having lost 0-1 in Sardinia! Cagliari, at that time, had some top players...Luigi Riva of course, but also: Albertosi, (the regular Italy 'keeper), Domenghini, Gori, Poletti......all Italy internationals of the era and the Brazilian Nene! Unfortunately I no longer have the tournament brochure....(passed down lol), so can't confirm who actually lined up for them !! The 'top' English and Italian team from the overall group stage went straight through to the final and, so far as I recall, we entered the final group game, (Atalanta), as the third or fourth placed English outfit....needing a near miracle to qualify. I think we had to outscore a couple of teams and rely on Vicenza beating Blackpool...... Anyway, as the goals were going in, we were getting more and more convinced that we were indeed going to reach the final! Sadly, it turned out that Vicenza put out a weakened XI at the seaside and Blackpool won 10-0..Someone else , (Carlisle), scored a late goal too to finish above us...LCFC finished third in the English 'pool'. Our only '70s venture into Europe ended at the group stage !! Oh, and yes, 'Plod' were lenient that day and let some fans change terraces at half-time! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272818646526
