Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook confirmed that he would be interested in re-signing Callum Elder from Leicester City, according to Wigan Today.

Reece James left to join Sunderland this summer, leaving Wigan without a left-back on their books going into the new season.

And Cook has confirmed that they could bring Elder back to the DW Stadium, after he played a crucial role in their promotion campaign last season.

The 23-year-old joined the Latics on loan for the season last July and played 33 games for the club as they won the League One title.

Cook said: “For what Callum’s done at this club last year, he would certainly be on the list.”

The former Australia youth international is currently with the senior Leicester squad, preparing for the new season, but his future at the King Power Stadium looks uncertain as he sits behind Ben Chilwell in the pecking order.

The former Brentford and Barnsley loanee could head back to Wigan this summer now.

I think let him play in one or two of the pre season friendlies then decide whether it's worth keeping him or not, at the moment he is 3rd choice

Surely sending him back to Wigan is the best solution. Why keep him as 3rd choice and get no games when he can play every game for Wigan knowing they have no recognised LB.

Send him back Wigan then he can return next season after Fuchs has left. Seems the most logical thing to do

Seems a no brainer if we do so with the option to recall.

you can only recall in January now, he's older than Chilwell and tbh no ones really sure if he's any good

I think it's probably obvious now that he's unlikely to become PL standard. He's 24 in January and is making his way at League One/Championship level.

None of this having a look at him, he's a level short just like the vast majority of players in academies, sell and move on.

Nah get rid. My step dad is a season ticket holder at Wigan and he said he was ok last season in league 1 but not amazing. He said he was good defensively but offered little going forward so he definitely won't fit in here
