Collymore Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 I was hoping someone might be able to help answer a few questions... I'm looking to travel around London with a child (6 year old) on a weekend. We'll be flying into Stansted on the Sat morning and leaving from Stansted on the Sunday evening. From what I can tell.... I think the whole of the weekend is classed as "off peak" Children travel for free on underground Stansted Airport, although not on the underground line is classed in a London travel zone? Does this mean I can rock up at Stansted Airport and purchase (or pre book) some sort of Off Peak London travel card that will get me into London and use of the Underground for me and the kid? Or do I have to buy a train ticket separately to get into London from Stansted and then underground ticket on top of that?
Guest ttfn Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 Not sure about getting to London from Stansted but if you have a contactless debit/credit card you can use that to go through barriers on the underground and it caps the amount you pay at lower than the cost of a paper travel card. https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/tube-and-rail-fares/pay-as-you-go-caps#on-this-page-1

Kids deffo travel for free on all TFL transport. The problem is that Stansted is a fair way out.Theres an express train that takes you to Stratford or Liverpool Street.Or you can take the slower train To Tottenham Hale Which gets you on the tube network aswell.

Thanks. Do you know if I can get a travel card that covers the train into London from Stansted as well as all the travel on the underground? Looking on travel forums it seems unclear.
Heathrow fox Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 I don’t think you can.You would probably have to buy a separate ticket to get into London, then either use your contactless card or get an oyster to travel the tube.To be fair it’s very reasonably priced ?
Jay Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 The stansted express takes you straight into London BUT isn’t included in any TFL travel zone so you need to buy a separate ticket. https://www.stanstedexpress.com/

Gets you in the mix of it direct then just get a travel card for the day from the desk so it’s easier to get the kid through the barriers.

Yeah you can get a ticket with a one day travelcard included. It tends to be marginally cheaper than buying train ticket and travel card separate. You'd have to buy another on the Sunday though, wouldn't be included. As ttfn said, it's as easy and cheaper to just use contactless.

grobyfox1990 Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 Would recommend having a look at the bus from Stansted to London. Way cheaper than the train and quick. National express do a frequent service with stops all over London

Trav Le Bleu Posted 4 February 2019 Posted 4 February 2019 I thought this thread was either: A) about the gypsy community in our capital Or B) about committing basketball fouls against the London City Royals.
The Syrup Posted 4 February 2019 Posted 4 February 2019 There's a lot of engineering works at weekends on the line from Stansted to Liverpool Street, Next Sunday no trains are running, there is a replacement bus service from the airport to central London. Something to keep an eye on, (Google 'Lee Valley Rail Programme'). If trains are running when you travel then the Express stops at Tottenham Hale, quicker to get off there and get the Victoria Line to the West End. The train station is separate from the tube station there but are next door. Exit the train station with your train ticket, re-enter the tube station with your contactless card. Use the wide gate with kids.
