oxford blue Posted 30 May 2019 Posted 30 May 2019 This song title (Dire Straits) sums up many payments for members of the House of Lords: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/may/30/labour-peer-never-spoke-house-of-lords-claims-50000-expenses Lord Paul, who claimed £47,000 and spoke once said "there was no requirement in the rules for lords to participate in order to claim allowances. I take a lot of interest in the House of Lords, but there is a lot more to be done than making speeches,” he said. Asked for an example, he replied: “Thinking, etc, and giving my point of view to colleagues.” So he might be thinking about the results of his favourite football team and talking about this with others in their tea rooms. It is time to reform the House of Lords. There are over 800 members- considerably more than in the Commons. I remember from afew years ago it was possible to claim expenses for attending- which can involve registerring attendance and then leave staright away. There may be a need for a second chamber, but it should only comprise active participants, not those who just think and chat.

Or, how about Nigel Farage taking twenty years worth of EU payments and similarly rarely attending? Money for nothing but hypocrisy.
SouthStandUpperTier Posted 30 May 2019 Posted 30 May 2019 Thought this was another thread about Danny Drinkwater.
Grebfromgrebland Posted 31 May 2019 Posted 31 May 2019 I thought I was finally going to find out how to get rich quick working part time from home.

Don’t think you’ll find the Conservatives willing to reform it, Labour might.

It would be nice if some of those in the house of Commons would occassionaly THINK. Chatting could be a step forward too.

All these years, nay decades, hearing that stinking garbage heap of a song.......and you've just taught me that the lyric refers to "chicks", not "cheques" (or "checks", as they're pretending to be American). Thanks for educating me, Davie......though "money for nothing and your cheques for free" has a certain logic. Anyway, "we ain't got no money for nothing, we don't need no chicks for free, we don't have to listen to no steeenking Dire Straits"

When my car was broken into they stole a load of tapes but left that one behind.
