In the old days on Radio Leicester, when we didn't do many commentaries ie early 90s, we sometimes would share commentaries with the other local station. When we played at Ashton Gate, their guy used to refer to "City" and I was back in the studio and had no idea who was in possession!

You think Manchester has a bigger population than Birmingham? Birmingham is by far the biggest City in England outside London, it isn't even close. Birmingham is the only City apart from London with a population of over 1,000,000. The population of Manchester is under 600,000 and the population of Birmingham is well over 1,000,000. To give you an idea of how big Birmingham is, it's got a bigger population than Manchester and Liverpool combined.
z-layrex Posted 27 July 2019 Posted 27 July 2019 Man City are the biggest club with City in their name, naturally they will be referred to as City. Never once has it bothered me. Do West Ham or Newcastle fans complain when people say Utd?

I think nothing, and know nothing of populus other than it takes more than 1 measurement to determine, for instance I do know there are a far greater number of cnuts that live in Birmingham.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_city_of_the_United_Kingdom
whoareyaaa Posted 27 July 2019 Posted 27 July 2019 I honestly don't think it matters surely Leicester is more appropriate anyway that being called City ... Plus you cant call them both Manchester so they have to refer to one as City and one as United or we wouldn't have a clue what they was talking about ?
Ted Maul Posted 27 July 2019 Posted 27 July 2019 Why don't we trademark 'Football Club' whilst we're at it. Sick of everyone else using it!

Man City, same number of syllables as, for example, Newcastle. Is it just laziness or the effect of Sky Sports ?? There are no clubs named City or United.

We could win the league ten years running and have four billion world wide fans, we'd still be Leicester and they'd still be City. It's just a shortening of Man City to its natural end, you can't call them Man because it leaves too much ambiguity. I mean their nickname is even the Citizens, its more a part of their identity than it is ours. People are just ****ing weirdly sensitive about shit and act like its some sort of slight against us. Christ we have a ridiculously insecure fanbase.
Carl the Llama Posted 27 July 2019 Posted 27 July 2019 The question has raised some interesting arguments about using 'city' to refer to various clubs but genuinely why would you do this?

I've still got plenty of time to winge about this in between moaning on BBC have your say and complaining to my MP about the number of children living on my street...
