Mystery surrounds 800-year-old Leicester burial pit containing 123 bodies

In gardens a few metres from Leicester Cathedral, archaeologists have made a disturbing discovery. Their excavations have revealed a narrow vertical shaft filled with the remains of 123 men, women and children.

It is one of the largest pit burials ever excavated in the UK, with subsequent research suggesting the bodies were dumped there more than 800 years ago, early in the 12th century.

Some good news re public transport in Leicester.

I dropped my wife’s car off at VW in town…. Loads of options and times going back up London Rd…. Bus lanes made it quicker than a car and only £2 and done through Apple Pay…. I shall aim to use the bus service more often I think…

I moved to Hinckley 2 years ago and started using the bus to go to the football but I gave it up last season as they were never on time sometimes not arriving at all after waiting 45 mins when they're supposed to be every 15 mins. Not surprising since they've come from Nuneaton or Coventry

It can take about 30 minutes to get into from LFE the traffic is that bad too on that service

It must've been surreal, and a relief, for the Archaeologists when they discovered his remains.

Memories of Hutchinson Walk ( The Birdcage ) Leicester .
Hutchinson Walk is a public footpath in the Highfields area of Leicester that connects Swain Street to Hutchinson Street.
Many happy hours were spent here trainspotting by the locals .

May be a black-and-white image of 1 person, bicycle and street

Trainspotting was all the rage right up to the 1970's, as this young lad shows in March 1962, waiting intently for the haze to clear above Leicester railway junction for one fleeting moment so that he can spot the 46494 .

Fast forward 50 years and he'd be lying on the ground with a stab wound and the bike would be gone.

Leicester suffragette Alice Hawkins being escorted to prison for her part in digging the words "votes for women" on a local golf course. Photo from family of Alice Hawkins.
Many Leicester women were involved in the struggle to obtain the vote and became members of the Leicestershire Women’s Suffrage Society which was formed in 1887.
Alice Hawkins was a major figure in the movement and was president of the Leicester Independent Women’s Boot and Shoe Trade Union. She was jailed five times because of the militant action she took while campaigning for the right for women to vote.
