City of Leicester & Leicestershire - The Good and Historical Stuff

Recommended Posts

Jewry Wall will be fantastic when finished, unfortunately for the council they started prior to Covid, contractors went bust and this has cost the project even more money. There is also the fantastic, at least grade two listed Vaughan College that deserves consideration and is also being renovated as part of the museum development.

Western Park needs housing, the city needs housing, where the houses will be built is a completely derelict and to some interpretation technically a brownfield site, so this is a sensible decision.

Now and Then. Middleton Street, Aylestone.

Formally Coalpit Lane I believe

A reminder that Aylestone used to be a village, like many others that have been swallowed up by the expanding city. Braunstone is another

The area known as ‘The Lanes’ dates back to medieval Leicester with the street pattern remaining much the same for many centuries. Roughly following the ancient Roman road that connected the west and east gates of the town the street has had various names over the years but by 1587 it was known as Silver Street. The name probably comes from the silversmiths that had set up shop in the area.

Recognise the building to the left ‘A. Dunkley Tea & Coffee Confectioner’? This is now ‘The Wardrobe’, part of the Royal Arcade that links through to High Street.

Story of Leicester

  ·
#ThrowbackThursday with this brilliant shot of High Street and Silver Street in June 1978.

The road on the immediate right is now the entrance to Highcross Shopping Centre. The Freeman Hardy and Willis store can be seen on the left. This well known boot and shoe retailer, founded in Leicester in 1875, had 500 stores nationwide and were a familiar sight on the high street. They ceased trading in 1996, after 121 years.

The former Victoria Park Hotel is being renovated into apartments 🏢

The same building is seen in the wonderful Bob Dylan film Don't Look Back, as fans chase his car after the gig at the De Mont:

The road sign says 'University Road'.

Now the scene from the film: blink and you'll miss it:

Taken around 1961 - Jobcentre on the right, Epic House and Safeway supermarket under construction. My Dad was a keen photographer but he threw many of his old photos out after a stroke in 1980.

Now and Then. The Three Cranes pub. Just to think that the beautiful building on the right was demolished and replaced with something that resembles prison walls. The word sacrilegious comes to mind. The history of Leicester, is disappearing little by little, every single day.

The Boohoo factory in Thurmaston is to close.

Was all a fake/front anyway, set up in response to the expose of illegal immigrant Indians working in Leicester sweatshops for about 4 rupees a week.

Nobody ever worked there

Grannys nightclub, in London Road, Leicester, back in March 1977

Oh, the memories...

The Scot's guy that owned the place was a ruthless character and would sack any DJ if customer levels dipped. I managed 18 months and was the longest serving DJ at the time! He was also the only person I have ever know personally that owned a Rolls Royce.

I met Wallington, Worthington, (ladies man), Weller, the Birch (really funny guy),  and bizarrely, Englebert Humperdinck, during my time there.
