Second one better by half?

I was wondering whether it was Too Clever By Half but I couldn’t make it fit.

We had a whole round of 12 of these on the quiz on Monday night, wish I'd taken a picture of the sheet to put on here.

Nothing as high brow as @Countryfox posts, but a few good ones.

We were the only team to get them all right! Here's some that I can get across and can remember:

1:

11001001100

Marley

Dylan

2:

AGE

A  G  E

AGE

3:

(r-i)/(s+k)

2 is Middle Age Spread

3 calculated risk?

Still thinking about 1, but I normally see these ages after the event, so am getting in early…

Correct with both.

We debated space age for number 2 at first!

Lads and ladies, assistance please. We can’t get this from an advent calendar…

It’s not simply “A Christmas Carol”, is it?

Might be, but if it is, I don’t really follow the clueing. It’s on an advent calendar, so Christmas is a bit assumed, and it literally says the word carol. Not sure what the other words are doing at that stage.

That’s not to say it’s not the right answer, but if it is, I can’t find a reason that is satisfying for it…

It’s not an answer I’m happy with, granted. But my reasoning is that “A” identifies one whereas the other words are all in multiples, then all the words are names relating to (or arguably following) “Christmas”, then “Carol” is the name that the arrow is pointing at.

But if anyone has better I’ll happily be overruled.

This is correct. This same dingbat was in a Christmas Quiz I did last weekend. The answer isn't very satisfying but that is what they said

Don’t really see that at all but can’t think of anything else for now ..  all girls names ? ..  maybe something to do with that ??

In the meantime here’s today’s Leicester Mercury offering ..  not bad I suppose ..  took me all of 2 minutes ..  answer in tomorrow’s edition ..  :)
